Instagram is always releasing new and exciting features to keep the app entertaining for its users.
Changes to messaging, Reels, algorithms, feeds and settings occur all the time, but the latest update concerns Stories.
For years, users have been asking for the ability to like an Instagram Story, and that’s finally become a reality in 2022.
Here’s how to do it…
This is not a drill. Instagram has added the ability to like people’s Stories and users couldn’t be more excited.
Previously, the only option was to respond to a Story with a direct message which always seemed a little too personal.
On Valentine’s Day (February 14th), Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri took to Twitter to announce the new Story feature, saying:
“Starting to roll out today, you can now send some love by liking people’s Stories without sending a DM.”
“Likes on Stories are private and do not have counts. Rather, they appear as hearts next to people’s handles in your Stories view sheet,” he added.

Starting to roll out today, you can now send some love by liking people’s stories without sending a DM.

To like an Instagram Story, all you have to do is tap the heart icon that appears at the bottom of the Story.
The icon will be between the ‘send message’ box and little paper airplane symbol.
Tap the heart and the author of the Story will receive a like that shows up in their viewer sheet, not their DM’s.
If the symbol isn’t there yet, that means the feature isn’t available in your region yet.
Instagram is slowly rolling out the ability to like Stories across the world right now, so it should arrive for you soon.
Head to the App Store and see if there is an Instagram update available as this may bring the new feature to your account.
The likes do not appear in your DM’s, they are visible on the same page that shows how many views your Story got.
Head to the viewer sheet by tapping the profile pictures in the bottom left-hand corner.
If a person liked the Story, a little heart icon will pop up next to their name.
Adam Mosseri revealed that Instagram designed it this way to “clean up DM’s” and enable people to like posts “without worrying about cluttering up your messages”.
