Nokia has begun to deploy the Lumia Black update (formally known as “Bittersweet Shimmer”) to the Lumia 1020. The first users, to receive the new firmware are those who bought the cameraphone from AT&T, but in the coming weeks, the update may arrive worldwide.
After installing the update the OS version number will be bumped to 8.0.10517.150 (i.e. build 10517) and the firmware version will be 3051.40000.1346.0001.
In addition to all the improvements introduced with Windows Phone 8 Update 3, the Lumia Black also includes the features announced with the recent Lumia 1520.
After installing the update, the Lumia 1020 can connect with accessories that use the standard Bluetooth 4.0 LE, reducing battery consumption and increasing the performance. However, developers will have to wait for the release of the APIs, to build the compatible apps. The second new feature is the support for the RAW DNG format. In the settings of the camera, an option has been added to choose the format and resolution of pictures: JPG (5 MP), DNG (38 MP 4:3) or DNG (34 MP 16:9).
For photography enthusiasts, the Nokia Camera app will be the default camera app — available also on Windows Phone Store — which is the combo of the previous Pro Camera and Smart Camera apps. It also includes improved algorithms for JPG pictures, white balance and noise reduction. Users can now take pictures without entering the PIN – by press and hold camera button for few seconds — to unlock the phone. And, finally an updated Glance app is introduced incorporating notifications for email, messages, missed calls and vibrate mode, and new colors (green and blue).
Moreover, the perks of Windows Phone 8 Update 3 for Lumia 1020 are already known, which include driving mode, screen rotation lock, custom ringtones, faster pairing mode with windows 8.1 pcs over Bluetooth, app switcher for fast closing of the app, Wi-Fi connection during setup and better storage management
