Sony’s known for releasing two Xperia Z models each year and this year’ll prove to be no different. We’ve seen some pictures of what many believe to be the Xperia Z3 posing beside a Galaxy Note 3. Of course, the Xperia Z3 is smaller than the Galaxy Note 3 with its 5.7-inch display, but we assumed that, the Xperia Z2 having a 5-inch display, the Xperia Z3 would’ve something close to the body size of the Galaxy S5.
Well, thanks to Evan Blass (@evleaks), we now have all the latest information on the Xperia Z3 that we could’ve ever asked for. In our earlier work on the Xperia Z3, we noted that a new Sony device with the model number D6653 was making its way across the Web. The D6653 device that we assumed was Sony’s Xperia Z3 is, in fact, the next flagship device that’s due to be announced in September.
@evleaks confirmed the model number, the device, and the specs on Wednesday with the words, “Xperia Z3 (D6653): SD801 (2.4Ghz x 4), Adreno 330, 5.15” @ 1080p, 3GB/16GB, 20.7MP/2.1MP, KK 4.4.4.” @evleaks’s shorthand tells us that the name of the next Sony flagship device will be called the Xperia Z3 (no surprise here), that it will feature a 5.15-inch display with Full HD resolution (1920 x 1080p), Adreno 330 GPU, along with a quad-core (x 4) Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 (“SD” stands for Snapdragon), with 3GB of random access memory (RAM), 16GB of internal memory storage, running Android KitKat 4.4.4 (as seen by the “KK” designation).
Android 4.4.4 KitKat was issued by Google some days ago to patch up security holes in Android, but seeing 4.4.4 KitKat as the latest update for the Xperia Z3 come September shows us that it’s likely we won’t see Android L until October, thus confirming HTC’s Android L release calendar. The Android 4.4.4 KitKat designation for the Xperia Z3 also shows us that Google has had nothing planned this month (July) as far as revealing a new update for Android. Google revealed the 2013 Nexus 7 last July along with Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, but the company will likely wait until October (around the one-year anniversary of the LG Nexus 5) to reveal a new Android update.
The front-facing camera on the Z3 will sit at 2.1MP, the back camera at 20.7MP, which is nothing much beyond what we’ve seen with the Xperia Z1 and Z2 cameras.
The Xperia Z3’s display will be slightly larger than the Galaxy S5’s (5.15 vs. 5.1 inches, respectively), but will feature the Snapdragon 801 processor, Full HD resolution, and the Adreno 330 graphics processor unit – three specs that match the Galaxy S5 completely. The Xperia Z3 looks to have 3GB of RAM (the Galaxy S5 has 2GB of RAM), as well as what’re the same-specced cameras that’re featured on the Xperia Z2. In other words, we’re looking at a smartphone that’s more of an Xperia Z2 Plus than an Xperia Z3. Some criticize Sony for failing to add 4GB of RAM instead of 3GB, but we believe that Sony’s front and back cameras should’ve seen an increase this year.
Sony’s Xperia Z3 won’t be behind in the smartphone race this year, seeing that Full HD resolution, Snapdragon 801, Adreno 330 graphics, and a 5-inch display are typical specs for 2014. Where Sony drops the ball, however, is in offering the same cameras that exist in the Xperia Z2. We can’t honestly recommend the Xperia Z3 to customers who’ve purchased the Xperia Z2 (or even the Xperia Z1). The Xperia Z1 has the same GPU (Adreno 330) and the same back camera as the Z3 will have. The Xperia Z2 has a 20.7MP back camera as well.
The Xperia Z1 also had Full HD resolution, so Sony’s responsible for maintaining the same screen resolution in three Xperia Z models now. With LG going for a Quad HD (2,560 x 1,440p) resolution in the LG G3, and Samsung implementing it into the party-throwing Galaxy Note 4 this September, you’d expect Sony to play along. Apparently, Sony’s not interested.
If these specs are correct (and, with @evleaks, they’re more right than not), then we’re looking at a phone with a slightly larger display that sports many of the same specs as previous Xperia Z models. The leaked photo from earlier shows that Sony wants to position its Xperia Z3 alongside of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 3.
The rumored information for the Xperia Z3 that we’ve received shows that the Xperia Z3 will stick to much of what worked for the Xperia Z2. Sony’s got a winning camera, no doubt, but we did expect the back camera megapixel count to increase. Apparently, Sony believes that its near-21MP camera will continue to dominate this year, and we agree. We don’t see any other manufacturer coming along (in the major Android players, that is) with anything larger than this. Still, we were hoping for something more, but with 6-month upgrades, it’s not uncommon to see slight tweaks to smartphones that’re already top of the line. If Sony increased its back camera megapixel count now, who’d buy the Xperia Z4 that’ll come out next Spring ( 6 months after the company’s September announcement)?
At this point, Sony’s rumored Xperia Z3 specs, Apple’s iPhone 6 specs, and Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 are making the buzz. Sony’s Xperia Z3 will prove exciting for those who’ve never purchased an Xperia Z device, but, for those who have, you need not worry about missing anything. You’ve got until 2015 to worry about that.
Are you disappointed about the Xperia Z3 specs leaked here? Did you expect something different, and, if so, what exactly?
