HONOLULU (KHON2) — Hawaii Gov. David Ige gave an update on Tuesday on the 2022 State Tax Rebate distribution schedule.
Gov. Ige said so far approximately $294 million is being returned to Hawaii’s taxpayers.
“This money will go directly into the pockets of Hawaii’s hardworking people. On Friday, Sept. 2, the Department of Taxation released the first 100,000 direct deposit refunds to the Department of Accounting and General Services for the first phase of this tax refund.”

Gov. Ige continued: “We expect 100,000 taxpayers will receive the first deposit on or about Sept. 12. These are for those filing income tax returns and having a direct deposit refund as part of their tax returns. There will be two more direct deposit distributions on Sept. 9 and Sept. 13.”
“Those who filed their tax returns by July 31, and who expected or included a direct deposit account number should receive their direct deposit refunds by Sept. 21,” according to Gov. Ige.
The governor said “paper check refunds will be made in batches of 2,000 until additional check stock arrives. Once the check stock is received, paper refunds will increase to 90,000 per week.”
According to the governor, there are 303,000 director deposit refunds and 295,000 paper refunds scheduled to be distributed so far. Eligible taxpayers must file their 2021 tax returns by Dec. 31, of this year to qualify for this tax refund.
Taxpayers who filed individual income tax returns for 2021 and have been residents of Hawaiʻi for at least nine months are eligible for the refund.
“It is my hope that the $300 million in tax refunds being distributed so far, bring some relief to the hardworking people of the State of Hawaiʻi who were hit hard by the pandemic.”
The State of Hawaii Department of Taxation created an Act 115 Refund page on its website for residents and said those that filed their tax returns can expect to see their $300 refund by September or October and it all depends on when they filed their tax return.
According to the department, Act 115 is a one-time constitutional refund that was signed into law by Gov. Ige on June 22, for each qualifying resident taxpayer who files an individual income tax return for the 2021 tax year on or before Dec. 31.
