Finally some good news for Xperia loyals, as Sony on Monday officially announced its latest flagship, the Sony Xperia Z4 in Japan. Surprisingly, the latest flagship has been launched without creating a lot of media buzz only in Japan, which will be available in the home country starting this summer. For now there is no official confirmation of its global launch, neither are there any pricing details provided by the company.
The launch of the Xperia Z4 comes 7 months after its predecessor was launched back in September at IFA, suggesting that Sony might do away with its one-year flagship cycle.
The phone looks strikingly similar to its predecessor, though this time around its enclosed in a metallic frame. Coming on to the specs of the latest flagship that have officially been listed – the Xperia Z4 flaunts a 5.2 inch full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) Triluminos display coupled with Sony’s X-Reality mobile picture engine. Under the hood, the Android Lollipop based smartphone is powered by a 64-bit octa-core (quad-core 1.5GHz + quad-core 2GHz) Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor with 3GB of RAM to roll with it.
Optics on the phone will be the same 20.7-megapixel autofocus rear camera, though the rear camera has been given a slight overhaul as it now gets a 1/2.3-inch Exmor RS BSI sensor, Bionz image processor, and a pulsed LED flash. On the front, the Xperia Z4 gets a 5.1-megapixel front-facing camera with Exmor R BSI sensor, which is quite an upgrade from the 2.2-megapixel front camera of its predecessor. Other camera features include a 25mm wide angle lens along with electronic image stabilization.
In terms of memory, the Xperia Z4 includes 32GB of inbuilt storage expandable up to 128GB via microSD slot, while juicing up the latest flagship will be a 2930mAh battery. In addition, the Xperia Z4 gets an IPX5/IPX8 equivalent certification, which makes the phone waterproof, implying that the phone can be submerged to up to 4.92 feet for 30 minutes. While the IP6X certification makes it a dust-proof device.
Connectivity options on the phone include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi with hotspot, 3G, 4G LTE, GPS/ A-GPS, Glonass, Micro-USB, DLNA, and NFC.
Other changes include the waterproof USB port, instead of the cover flap for the USB port we saw with the Xperia Z3. The smartphone also supports high-resolution audio with LDAC compression technology. The Xperia Z4 gets a plethora of color options including White, Black, Copper and Aqua Green.
Sony will be providing additional accessories for the Xperia Z4, which includes a new case with window and a new desktop holder.
