Popular instant messaging app WhatsApp has crossed 800 million monthly active users. The confirmation comes after a Facebook post by its CEO and co-founder Jan Koum. In addition, the latest version of WhatsApp will provide backup/restore points for chat history and media via Google Drive.

Koum also stressed upon the fact that active users are different from registered users and said, “WhatsApp – now serving 800,000,000 monthly active users. Reminder for the press out there: active and registered users are not the same thing.” The company crossed the 700 million active users mark in January and has added a 100 million users in a mere four months.

If this growth remains constant, WhatsApp is expected to cross the 1 billion active users by the end of the year. Despite the growing competition from the likes of Hike, Line, WeChat and Facebook’s Messenger, WhatsApp has more or less remained unscathed by its competitors. The company recently announced the popular voice calling feature for Android users, and is expected to roll out the same on iOS and Windows Phone soon.

WhatsApp’s success in the instant messaging arena is well-deserved. The company is constantly striving to improve the overall user experience with new features being rolled out for users frequently. The company also released the new Material Design for Android users, which is currently available only in APK file format. It brings a new look and feel to the app with a refreshing color scheme. They’ve brought new icons into the mix, and even provided simpler, and cleaner lines within the entire app. That’s something that users really wanted to see, and something that WhatsApp has finally brought to the table.

Meanwhile, the company is also gearing towards adding backup/restore points, for chat history and media via Google Drive. Google Drive integration is currently available for Android in APK format with version 2.12.45.
