Finally, iPhone users also get the much awaited WhatsApp voice calling feature with the new WhatsApp iOS app update (Version 2.12.1) that was rolled out on Android a month ago. The new update also includes new features such as quick camera shortcuts in chats along with sharing extension. The Apple iTunes store listing clearly mentions that WhatsApp’s voice calling feature will clearly be seeding out across the globe over the next few weeks.
“Call your friends and family using WhatsApp for free, even if they’re in another country. WhatsApp calls use your phone’s Internet connection rather than your cellular plan’s voice minutes. Data charges may apply. Note: WhatsApp Calling is rolling out slowly over the next several weeks”, reads the App Store listing.
The new update brings with it a plethora of handy features, specially the sharing extension feature that enables users to share images, videos, links to a WhatsApp contact via its Camera, Photos app. While the new quick camera feature in chats allows users to use the camera right from the chat screen.
Other new additions include the ability to edit contacts direct from WhatsApp itself doing away the need to go back to the main contacts menu to make any changes. Users will also be able to share multiple videos in one go, along with options to crop and rotate videos before sending them.
Interestingly, the iOS WhatsApp update comes soon after the company co-founder and CEO Jan Koum announced on Facebook that the instant messaging app has now 800 million active users. In January, the company had crossed 700 million active users, thus adding a whopping 100 million active users in just four months.
With the voice calling feature now available for Android and iOS, users on Windows Phone still have to wait. Though not for long, as the company announced that the voice-calling feature is in development for the Windows Phone platform.
The instant messaging app has come a long way and now has the largest active user base. And rightly so, as its much more than just a simple messaging app. It’ll be interesting what other features and changes we’ll see in WhatsApp in the near future.
