PlayStation 4 finally gets a Media player app, the company also announced a couple of throwback accessories along with Final Fantasy VII Remake.

Sony has officially announced that the PlayStation 4 will finally be getting a media player, aptly titled “Media Player for the PS4”. The new media player app can be used to play music and videos, and view photos. Users who own a PS4 can now head over to the PlayStation Store to find the new app. Sony said during its E3 pre-show press conference that the new app would be going live very soon, so by now it should show up on the PS4’s content screen.

Once installed, users can watch movies either from USB drive or via the home server, which will show up as a media option.

Of course, even music can be played with the new Media Player, which supports a wide range of formats including MKV, AVI, MP4, JPEG, PNG, MP3 and AAC. While photos can be viewed in JPEG, PNG and BMP formats.

Given the fact that the PlayStation 3 comes with a media player, it was rather baffling on Sony’s part to not include a media player with the PS4. The move should definitely find PS4 owners elated, as the company claims it has been receiving constant feedbacks from users about the absence of a media player.

“We know the Media Player has been a highly-requested feature for PS4 and we want to thank you for passionate feedback,” Sony said on the official PSBlog.

Sony also announced a remake of one of the most influential and loved games in history – the iconic role-playing classic Final Fantasy VII will be developed by Square Enix, that’ll be launched on the PS4 before it arrives on other platforms.

This year also marks the 20th anniversary of the PS. Hence, Sony decided to throw in a dash of nostalgia and announced retro themed standalone accessories for the PS4 at E3.

The company announced that it’ll sell a 20th-anniversary edition of its DualShock 4 controller and also a ‘Gold Wireless’ headset for the PS4. The special edition controller sports the retro grey color we saw with the original PS and is priced at $64.99. While, the Gold Wireless Bluetooth also has the same design along with the classic multi-colored PS logo and is priced at $99.99.

Both the above-mentioned accessories will go on sale this fall.
