The offline video downloader, a feature which does not comply with the Google guidelines has been removed from the updated YouTube app for Windows Phone
Microsoft has once again updated the YouTube app for Windows Phone in order to try and comply with the guidelines that Google has asked Microsoft to follow. The strange point is that even though the YouTube app has been updated, the app is still ad free and you can watch videos without having to worry about any ads and pop-ups here and there.
It seems that even after updating the app, Microsoft has not quiet solved the problem that was identified by Google. It all started some time back when Microsoft updated the YouTube app for Windows Phone in order to improve features etc. This update did not have support for ads meaning that Google ad other third party content makers would be losing revenue.
In order get this right, Google sent a cease and desist letter to Microsoft asking them to remove the app from the Windows Phone Store. The main complaint Google had was that the app did not show ads to users and hence does not comply with Google’s guidelines. In response, Microsoft said that the company would be happy to do whatever was required in order to include ads into the app, but only if they were given access to the required APIs.
So rather than removing the app, Microsoft decided to update the app, which it has already done. However, once again the new update has the same problem that was spotted by Google earlier – the app does not support ads.
This new version does have one important change, the offline video downloader, a feature which does not comply with the guidelines has been removed from the app. And Microsoft has even addressed issues regarding restricted videos. The company gave out a statement to news outlets saying:
“Microsoft updated the Windows Phone YouTube app to address the restricted video and offline video access concerns voiced by Google last week. We have been in contact with Google and continue to believe that our two companies can work together to hone an app that benefits our mutual customers, partners and content providers. We’re earning new customers every day, with IDC reporting recently that Windows Phone posted the largest year-over-year gain among leading operating systems. We look forward to working with Google to maintain a great YouTube experience for the growing number of people who rely on both of our respective products.”
Right now, the newly update app is available on the Windows app store, so consumers can go ahead and download it if they want. However, because of the fact that ads are still not supported on this version, we wouldn’t be surprised if Google asks Microsoft to take down the app once again.
