With delay after delay, Windows 8.1 phones have received another blow. The old Lumia phones won't get Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview builds from Redstone branch until the official rollout.
It was only last week that Microsoft released Windows 10 ‘Redstone’ Preview Build 14267 to Insiders in the Fast Ring. However, it now appears that the Redstone builds apply to the newest Lumia phones only, namely Lumia 950, 950 XL, 550 and the more recent Lumia 650.
That surely has not been to the liking of those who have been attached to Windows Phone for longer. It applies to those who own devices running Windows 8.1 even if they have enrolled for updates in the Fast Ring.
Currently, the best that the Windows 8.1 devices can have is Windows 10 Mobile Insider Preview Build 10586.107, the Cumulative update Microsoft had rolled out earlier and is quite comprehensive in its own right.
Explaining the development, Gabe Aul stated the Redstone builds are only applicable to the handsets that have Windows 10 Mobile pre-installed on them. Further, older Windows 8.1 mobiles will have to wait for Build 14xxx to appear on their devices until Microsoft is ready with the official rollout of Windows 10 Mobile.
Unfortunately, it hasn’t been smooth sailing so far for Windows 10 Mobile that has been skipping its launch schedules fairly regularly. The closest to a definitive launch window for Windows 10 Mobile for older Lumia devices that we have had so far is from Microsoft’s Mexican subsidiary that said it’s coming on February 29th. The revelation was made in a Facebook post to which Microsoft hasn’t lent any credibility so far.
Further, Microsoft is expected to go for a phased rollout with some of the Lumia phones getting the update before others in line. As such, it is the Lumia 640 and 640 XL along with previous flagships, the Lumia 930 and 1520 that might receive the update first.
Meanwhile, Microsoft has rolled out a new Fast Ring update for PC and Mobile, making this the first instance of new builds being released for both segments on the same day.
Build 14271 applies to Windows 10 PCs and supersedes Build 14267 released just last week. Similarly, Build 14267.1004 applies to Windows 10 phones.
None of the latest builds for either PCs or Mobiles introduces any new features but comes with a bunch of fixes. Notable among these is the one that prevented Lumia 550 from getting charged via USB that has been fixed.
