Today in a press conference at E3 2013, Sony has revealed its most awaited next-gen gaming console, Sony PlayStation 4. PlayStation 4 or PS4 is the successor of Sony PlayStation 3 and looks similar to the latest Xbox One showed by Microsoft earlier today at E3 but brings something new to appeal its customers.
Sony PlayStation 4’s initial announcement in February this year highlighted solely the games, capabilities and controller of the system but lacked the true images of the box itself. For the first time, we have images of actual PS4 console, the hardware specs, pricing & availability and many more.
Andrew House, the Sony’s Chief Executive, gave the first glimpse of the PS4 addressing it as a console of “unparalleled power” and promoted it under the tagline “Revolutionize the way you play and enjoy gaming that goes beyond boundaries”.
PlayStation 4 Design
The PS4 comes with a modern look which appears to be an intermediate design between the Xbox One and the early-gen PS2. This gamer-centric console packs powerful graphics, speed, intelligent personalization, innovative second-screen features, immersive gaming experiences and PlayStation exclusives into its apparently sleek body. Hence, it looks cooler than the Xbox One.
PlayStation 4 Specifications
The customizable chip of the console is powered by an 8-core low power x86-64 AMD “Jaguar” processor, 8GB ultra-fast GDDR5 memory, built-in hard disk drive, Blu-ray/DVD drive and includes a 1.84 TFLOPS, AMD RadeonTM Graphics Core Next engine GPU. It has support for super-speed USB 3.0, Ethernet (10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, 1000BASE-T), IEEE 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth 2.1.
New DualShock 4 Controller
The PlayStation 4 uses a wireless DualShock 4 controller which looks similar to its predecessors, but have a lot of new features packed into it. The 162mm x 52mm x 98mm controller weighs 210gm and features a two-point touchpad, new share button, better designed analog sticks, easy-to-use triggers, a light bar for the PlayStation Eye, six-axis motion sensing system, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR for wireless communication, headphone jack, built-in mono speaker and an inbuilt Li-ion rechargeable Battery.
The PlayStation 4 comes with a 1280×800 pixel x 2 camera which measures 186mm x 27mm x 27mm. The 183gm camera features dual lenses capable of capturing the image at a distance ranging from 35cm and above with a field-view angle of 85 degrees. Further, it comprises of a 4 Channel Microphone Array and a PlayStation 4 dedicated AUX connector.
Game Reuse & no to the full-time Internet Connection
Sony announced that the PlayStation 4 will support used games or second-hand games without imposing any restrictions on them. Additionally, the system will not require any online authentication for disc-based games. Hence, the console will work even if the user has not authenticated himself over the internet via PlayStation 4 within 24hours.
In the conference, Sony revealed that 140 PlayStation 4 games are under development, out of which 100 will be released soon within the first year of PS4. Sony has a small list of games that have been announced for the PS4. The list includes Driveclub, Killzone: Shadow Fall Mad Max, The Order: 1886, Transistor, Final Fantasy XV, Kingdom Hearts III, Outlast, Skylanders Swap Force, Secret Ponchos, Infamous Second Son, WatchDogs, Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, Deep Down, Thief, Call Of Duty: Ghosts, Destiny, The Witness and The Knack. London-based The Order: 1886 was among the exclusive PlayStation 4 games revealed at E3.
Sony impressed its customers by announcing that the trading, lending and selling of games will be now allowed, and the purchasing of a game will enable the consumer to own the game forever.
Shared Game Experiences
Gamers can now share their achievements by just hitting the SHARE button on the controller. The PlayStation 4 system also enhances social viewing by enabling you to broadcast your gameplay in real time.
PlayStation Gaikai Cloud Game Streaming
Sony’s Gaikai-powered game streaming service is not available for this new console right now. Rather, it will hit the PS4 in 2014 and will offer PS4 or VITA game streaming direct to the console besides offering the classic PS3 titles.
Pricing & Availability
Sony is all set to sell its PlayStation 4 for a cheaper price than its rival Xbox One. The Japanese firm has declared that the console will be made available for $399 which will be $100 less than the cost of the Xbox One.
Unfortunately, the exact release date of the device is yet not clarified by the Sony, but the company has plans to launch the PlayStation 4 during the holiday season this year.
