Tesla has updated its app for iOS to version 4.14, and with it come two new features.
The first is iOS lock screen widgets. There are two widgets to pick from, both of which display the vehicle’s battery level. There’s a small circular widget that fills in based on the vehicle’s state of charge, and there’s a larger widget that includes the vehicle’s name and a numerical view of the vehicle’s battery level, either in percent or miles/km, depending on what your app set to.
The second feature is the ability to unlatch the driver’s side door from the app.
The door handles on the Model 3 and Model Y aren’t powered and with the right mix of water and cold weather, the door handle can sometimes freeze to the door frame.
The ability to unlatch the door from the app means that the door handle isn’t used at all and the door is electronically unlatched, causing it to open just enough for you to grab the side of the door to fully open it.
The ability to unlatch the door is only available on the Model 3 and Model Y and it requires your vehicle to be on update 2022.36 or later, which is currently about 35% of the Tesla fleet.
To unlatch the door you’ll need to add the new “Unlatch Door” icon to the Quick Actions section of the Tesla app that appears under the vehicle visualization.
Unfortunately, Tesla hasn’t added the ability to unlatch the door in any other areas of the app, such as the Climate or Controls section, but hopefully, that’s coming in a future update.
Currently, version 4.14 of the app is only available for iOS but we expect it to be available in the Google Play store soon.

A powerful storm in California recently left a path of destruction, with fallen trees damaging cars and homes. Amidst the chaos, a Tesla Model 3 in Portola Valley became the unwitting target of a massive tree. Despite the severe damage, the Model 3’s robust roof and windshield structure shielded its passengers from harm.
Photographs shared by the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office on Twitter reveal the tree’s immense size and weight, emphasizing the significance of the Model 3’s performance in the incident. Such incidents serve as a reminder for drivers to avoid hazardous weather conditions whenever possible.
The image is reminiscent of the scary scene captured on video (video below) when a windstorm blew over a tree directly on to a Model 3. The occupants walked away unharmed. In the description of the video upload, the poster writes:
Large section of an old tree fell directly on my car, right above the driver’s seat… The footage is from the dash cam of the car behind us. We all walked away… thank you, higher powers and Tesla engineers.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) reports that the 2022 Model 3’s roof can withstand a staggering 20,835 lbs of force. This robust roof structure plays a critical role in protecting passengers from accidents involving falling trees or rollovers. IIHS roof strength tests the strength-to-weight ratio, or the force applied relative to the vehicle’s weight. A “good” rating requires a strength-to-weight ratio of at least 4. The Tesla Model 3 surpasses this benchmark with its exceptional 5.85 ratio.
Roof strength is vital in preserving occupant survival space during a rollover. Stronger roofs are less likely to crush, reducing the risk of injury from contact with the roof. They also help prevent ejections through windows, windshields, or doors that have broken or opened due to roof deformation.
The Tesla Model 3’s performance in this tree-crushing incident highlights the vehicle’s exceptional safety features and the company’s unwavering commitment to protecting its passengers. Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, initially said that FSD Beta version 11.3.2 would be the one distributed to all subscribers. However, Musk now says that Tesla is ready to expand FSD Beta to more owners this coming weekend. Given that the weekend is only three days away, it sounds like Tesla is happy with FSD Beta 11.3.1 and that will be the version that expands to more owners. At 11 PM last night, Musk tweeted:

FSD Beta v11.3 was sent to employees exclusively and v11.3.1 later went out to the original 1,000 beta testers. More than 350,000 owners with access to FSD Beta are ready for this milestone release.
With the new upgrade, drivers will find it simpler to grasp what the car is doing, thanks to various new representations. For instance, the path the car travels is now shown by a considerably thicker line, showing the whole space the car is currently using and will occupy soon. Moreover, chevrons have been added to the Tesla’s exterior to indicate when the vehicle is slowing down. A white or black line now shows in front of the Tesla to indicate to the supervising driver exactly where the vehicle will stop.
New FSD messages are also included in the update to inform the driver of their actions, such as halting at a red light or waiting for pedestrians. Also, a brand-new voice drive-notes feature enables drivers to leave audio feedback if they need to take over from FSD.
Along with these new features, FSD version 11.3.1 also includes several enhancements, including a new “Minimal Lane Changes” option that limits the number of lane changes the car makes, a new shortcut to the FSD profiles, and a redesigned Autopilot menu that eliminates older options and improves the clarity of the options for drivers. Release notes are available for FSD Beta 11.3.1 as well as an article describing all of the new features and visualizations.
The new FSD update is a huge step towards reaching autonomy, which Musk claims is the company’s top priority. During a recent conference with Morgan Stanley, Musk reaffirmed his commitment to creating a car that can function almost totally in autonomous mode.
Musk also spoke on Tesla’s goal to bring out a cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and driverless vehicle in the near future. This vehicle, which Musk anticipates to be substantially cheaper than Tesla’s current selection, will be produced at the company’s new facility in Mexico, which was unveiled during Investor Day. With autonomy as the company’s top priority, Musk sees the new car as a step in the right direction that will allow Tesla to support more drivers of sustainable powertrains.
Overall, the company’s dedication to autonomy and its goal for a more sustainable, autonomous future is highlighted by the most recent FSD upgrade and Musk’s remarks regarding the impending Tesla vehicle.
