Track Mode coming to the Tesla Model Y Performance – Not a Tesla App

Once again, Elon Musk has committed to making Track Mode available for the Tesla Model Y Performance. This request has been popular since the Model Ys started rolling off the production line in 2020. Tesla’s CEO responded to the latest call for track mode on Twitter by stating: This is harder than it sounds but ok.
Tesla Owners of Silicon Valley made the latest request; it was a repeat of an initial request by the same group back in July 2020.
Musk often responds to this club’s tweets. He’s now committed to Track Mode on the Model Y Performance three times. On February 20, 2022, @_bennettm_ tweeted: “Could 3/Y owners with Acceleration Boost upgrade get Track Mode, or at least a traction control disable function? Would be helpful for some of us who want to track our cars. Thanks.” Musk responded ok, which generated more than eight thousand likes.
Clearly, this has been on Tesla’s to-do list, and enthusiasts eagerly await the upgrade. Given that Track Mode was made available on Model 3 Performance in 2020 and for the new Model S in 2021, many likely assume adding it to the Model Y would be reasonably straightforward. However, Musk’s response, “This is harder than it sounds but ok,” gives a glimpse behind the scenes. The hold-up or the complication is unclear, but it sounds like it may be ready soon.
There’s a good reason the company wants to get this enhancement to Model Y. At the Tesla shareholders meeting in August, Musk said the Model Y is on track to be the best-selling vehicle worldwide by revenue in 2022 and will be the best-selling by volume in 2023. That’s a lot of owners and potential buyers who would like to take their Tesla to the track.
Track Mode gets rave reviews for its effectiveness on the Model S Plaid and the Model 3. It allows drivers to modify several features in the car to get it track-ready. These adjustments are significant; for example, the user can put more bias to the rear motor to correct a loose corner entry or exit.
Alternately there is the front-biased setup to correct under-steering. Users can also select how much assistance they want with stability or the level of regenerative braking. The post-drive cooling mode also keeps the vehicle decreasing the heat in parts lit up on the track. Plus, the system saves and times laps to a USB drive. It even shows g-force! Of course, the company warns that track mode is for closed circuit courses.

Tesla has opened the first V4 Superchargers, which appear to have the potential to be twice as powerful as the model it replaces. The world is starting to learn more about this newest addition to Tesla’s portfolio of DC fast-charging stations. Tesla started constructing its first fourth-generation Superchargers in the Netherlands earlier this month and officially opened them up to the public on March 15th.
Further details regarding the Supercharger V4’s capabilities are now available courtesy of a recent peek at the new charging station by nearby Tesla owners. According to the charger’s electric car specifications, it has a maximum power output of 600 kW and a maximum current of 615A at 1,000V.
This is the potential maximum for the new Supercharger V4, even if the highest-rated power is rarely maintained. The current restriction is at the level of the vehicle, as most, or potentially all Teslas today cannot manage to be charged at those levels.
This development might provide a glimpse into Tesla’s upcoming electric vehicle ambitions. At Tesla’s Semi delivery event, Tesla revealed that the Tesla Semi and Cybertruck would be the vehicles that would be able to take full advantage of Tesla’s upcoming V4 Superchargers.
Although V4 Superchargers feature a simpler design, the TESLA lettering on the new Superchargers does light up to make the Superchargers easier to spot.
The cables at V4 Superchargers are also significantly longer than in previous generations. Tesla’s previous Superchargers included fairly short cables that are about 6.5 feet (2m) long, but for V4 they’ve extended the length of the cables to almost 10 feet (3m) to make it easier to charge various types of vehicles.
During Investor Day, Tesla confirmed increasing manufacturing in preparation for a swift rollout. The new charger is projected to offer a higher charge rate than the Supercharger V3’s existing 250 kW ceiling for existing vehicles. They will also likely have a solution for CCS charging compatibility for electric vehicles not made by Tesla, by having a built-in Magic Dock in the U.S.
A judge has ruled that the California Civil Rights Department must provide details of its investigation into alleged race discrimination at Tesla’s main assembly plant before proceeding with a lawsuit against the electric vehicle maker. Reuters is reporting the decision by California Superior Court Judge Evelio Grillo could allow Tesla to limit the scope of the lawsuit filed last year.
Under California law, the Civil Rights Department is required to investigate worker discrimination complaints before suing employers. If it is found that certain claims against Tesla were not investigated, the company may attempt to have them excluded from the case. The department accuses Tesla’s Fremont plant of being a racially segregated workplace where Black employees face harassment, discrimination in job assignments, discipline, and pay.
Tesla denies these allegations, calling the lawsuit politically motivated. Although the department can challenge Grillo’s ruling at a hearing, judges cannot significantly alter their tentative decisions. The Civil Rights Department and Tesla have not immediately commented on the matter.
In a related development, Judge Grillo dismissed Tesla’s countersuit in January, which claimed that the agency failed to inform Tesla of the allegations or offer a chance to settle before filing the lawsuit in February 2022. Grillo stated that Tesla could present those arguments in its defense.
There are additional ongoing lawsuits in California courts accusing Tesla of allowing discrimination and sexual harassment at its factories. Tesla denies any wrongdoing. In April 2022, a federal judge in Oakland reduced a jury award from $137 million to $15 million for a Black worker who claimed racial harassment. The worker rejected the reduced amount, opting for a new trial on damages set to begin on March 27.
