Folks: It's a big year for our planet's giant disco ball. From crying off fake eyelashes to hot and spiritual romance, we've all felt the powerful effects of the full moon, which is just one important stop in an ancient ritual. The moon rotates around the Earth every month in a ritual dance known as the moon cycle. It begins with a new moon, which is associated with fresh starts. Then comes the waxing phase, during which the moon appears to be growing more prominent, which is why witchy folks associate this phase with growth. The waxing moon ultimately turns into the most infamous moon phase: the full moon.
Full moons are primal times for manifestation and climaxes (pun intended). This lunation can bring out everyone's inner animal. While astrologers usually associate this side effect with passion, it can also lead to fights, and there are even studies that show crime does go up during the full moon. I don't share all of this to imply that people suddenly become some modern millennial version of Michael J. Fox in the 1985 classic Teen Wolf every time a big, pretty full moon pops up in the sky; only to hammer home just how impactful these cycles can really be on many individuals.
After the full moon comes the waning phase, in which the moon appears to grow smaller and is a beautiful time for protection work. (If you're curious to learn more, we actually published a guide to moon phases and how to incorporate the lunar cycle into your magical practice, so read up on those if you're curious.) From a July full moon in Capricorn that could bring abundance to your professional life to a messy and dramatic Aries full moon in October, it's a big year for our planet's giant disco ball. And, if you think full moons are dramatic, just wait until you find out about what's happening during the two full moons and lunar eclipses, which occur in May and November in sensual Taurus and magnetic Scorpio.
January 17: Full moon in CancerThe moon rules caring cancer, so; as a result, these lunations can make us more emotional than other full moons. Cancer corresponds with the 4th House of Home and Family, and these cute crabs always love a cozy night with great food and their favorite people. Avoid any full moon drama by staying in this night and catching up with your partner, pet, or current TV show.
While the mysterious silver moon rules Cancer, Leo is governed by the bright and bold sun. Leos love going out, shaking their booties and fabulous hair, and bathing in attention. As a result, expect parties around this full moon, which bring out everyone's primal side. Forget about staying in; when the full moon falls in Leo, everyone wants to dance, make love, or at least make out with a stranger. But beware: Leos are drama queens, and full moons are always dramatic, so if you go partying like a primal queen, try to avoid getting in any fights.
Virgo is a grounded earth sign known for its precision to detail and perfectionism. The tarot card associated with Virgo is the hermit, and while Virgos know how to light up a room (hello Beyoncé), they also understand the importance of prioritizing health. After all, Virgo is the healer of the zodiac. Our bodies and minds are interconnected, so take it easy on this full moon. If any drama does go down, you don't want to catch a cold due to too much stress.
Libra is a lovely air sign ruled by planet Venus, the goddess of love, money, and beauty. While this energy is sweet and romantic, as an air sign and an epic flirt, Libras can be a bit flaky. Watch out for friends bailing, dates ghosting, or plans suddenly changing on this full moon.
Mark this one in your calendar because some significant changes will go down. This full moon falls in Scorpio, the sign of sex, death, and transformation, but it's also a total lunar eclipse. During lunar eclipses, we're are encouraged to let go of whatever is no longer serving us. Eclipses can bring sudden and swift change, and full moons are drama queens. As a result, you may experience unexpected changes surrounding this time, but remember that it's all for the best, even if it stings.
Sagittarius is ruled by lucky Jupiter, which is why your Sag friend always seems to get away with everything, including talking over everyone at dinner parties. The vibe of this full moon is talkative, loud, and even pretentious. It's probably not the best night for a political debate or a serious relationship talk, as you may speak impulsively or say something that you regret later. Instead, chill out with a movie or a luxurious hot bath.
Capricorn is ruled by strict Saturn and associated with the 10th House of Social Status. As a result, this full moon illuminates your professional life. Full moons can be dramatic, but that's not always a bad thing. Remember, they are also powerful times of manifestation. The Capricorn full moon could bring exciting new professional opportunities or a burst of energy helping you complete a project.
Because this lunation falls in Aquarius, the sign associated with the 11th House of Friendship, the focus of the August full moon is friendship. Full moons are unpredictable, so, on a bad day, this could mean petty bickering within your friend group. However, you can rise above this by using this full moon to chill out with your besties and indulge in your favorite guilty pleasures.
If any full moon will bring tears, it's the Pisces full moon. Pisces is a profoundly intuitive and creative water sign. However, they are prone to sadness with such an artistic temperament, which full moons can bring out in all of us. So, because you may feel extra emotional, use this moon to indulge in self-soothing activities, such as getting a massage, or enjoying a long hot bath or shower, ideally with fun bath bombs, salts, and perhaps even a water-proof sex toy. Pay attention to your dreams this night, as Pisces energy brings out the psychic in us all.
As the first sign of the zodiac (and a fire sign at that), Aries energy is known to be hot-headed, confident, and impulsive. Aries like to get what they want and tend to do so. As a result, you may see positive results on a long-term professional project during this full moon. Everyone is also going to be very, very turned on. Full moons are primal, to begin with, and Aries is ruled by Mars, the horny god of war. So, you can safely stay in and masturbate or make love to a trusted partner, or roll the dice and go on a date with someone new. It could lead to the best sex of your life, go up in flames, or both.
Taurus is a sensual sign ruled by lover Venus and loves snuggling with pets, eating and cooking delicious food, and allowing laziness once in a while. Considering that a full moon and eclipse combination tends to be ripe for disagreements and blowouts, of all the full moons in 2022, you should definitely stay in and take it easy during this one. And not even because bad things might happen, but because you'll be in the mood to do so.
On the last full moon of the year, you're allowed to go out and party. This one falls in Gemini, the zodiac's flirty, sexy social butterfly. While Gemini knows how to have a good time, the air sign also can keep things light even under pressure. So, while some of the usual full moon anxiety may occur, you should be able to dance yourself free of it.
