iPhone 14 leaks have already revealed a lot of changes, ranging from the radical and controversial to the expensive and the bizarre. But now potentially Apple’s shocking design decision has just been revealed.

In a new exclusive, respected site The Elec, has revealed that the iPhone 14 will — once again — miss out on a high refresh rate 120Hz ProMotion display. And in an era where high refresh rate displays are common even on mid-range smartphones, that’s a big gamble.
02/20 Update: And the gap between the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro models looks set to grow even further. According to a new report from Engadget Japan, Apple is planning to upgrade both the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max to 8GB RAM. This is a significant step-up after Apple stuck with 6GB for both the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro. It also pushes iPhones into the territory of Android smartphones, which have used greater RAM for many years. It is a well argued point that iOS requires less RAM than Android to run efficiently but the pattern is a little more nuanced than that. Notably, the respected PhoneBuff speed tests regularly show that Android flagships narrow the performance gap significantly as their additional RAM comes into play. This is far more representative of normal use, compared to standard benchmarking software. Moreover, RAM is critical to other functionality — notably cameras — so it will be intriguing to see whether Apple has big plans for the iPhone 14 line-up in this area after a relatively incremental generational upgrade last year.
02/22 Update: breaking news from respected outlet the Economic Daily News revealed that Apple’s design decisions for the iPhone 14 have now been finalized and the upcoming range has entered trial production to “collect data, correct abnormalities, evaluate the production process and products that need to be improved, and evaluate whether the trial-produced products are acceptable”. The trial production for the new iPhone models is expected to begin in late February/early March, which aligns with Apple’s design process in recent years. Moreover, the EDN has a strong track record with Apple leaks and there’s no reason to doubt this news. Why does trial production have to happen so early, given the iPhone 14 range is not expected to go on sale until late September/early October? So Apple can “establish appropriate production and testing machines” and “establish a quality monitoring process” — this is critical at the scale iPhone production operates. Any defect can cost the company billions of dollars. The news also means we are entering the ‘production leak’ period of iPhone rumors with photos of parts likely to appear over the coming months, which will shed light on Apple’s component decisions. This should firm up the question over whether Apple has opted for 8GB of RAM in its iPhone 14 Pro models, as well as the choice of modem, camera modules, storage options, battery capacities and more. In short: iPhone rumor season is set to go into overdrive Watch this space.
Breaking this down, The Elec explains that Apple screen supplier BOE will increase its business with Apple because “it will be supplying 6.06-inch low-temperature polycrystalline silicon (LTPS) thin-film transistor (TFT) OLED panels for the upcoming iPhone 14 series.”
LTPS displays were used by older iPhones such as the iPhone X, iPhone 11 and iPhone 12 as well as the standard iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini, all models with standard 60Hz refresh rates. For ProMotion displays, Apple has exclusively used LPTO panels. This is because LPTO panels are capable of variable refresh rates, which allow them to counter the battery drain of high refresh rates with low rates for moments such as reading emails.
Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro models are expected to have a polarizing i-shaped cutout to replace the notch
Furthermore, unless Apple plans to break with tradition, the company likes to pair the functionality of its non-Pro models. This means The Elec’s news that the iPhone 14 will have an LTPS panel, strongly suggests the new iPhone 14 Max will have one as well.
Apple stalwarts will say anyone desperate for ProMotion can get an iPhone 14 Pro model but it isn’t so simple this year. Recent leaks have revealed that iPhone 14 Pro models will have a polarizing i-shape cutout to replace the notch and they are also tipped to be more expensive
It looks like iPhone fans will have some tough decisions to make in 2022.
