The Motorola Edge 20 series will be updated to Android 12 and Android 13 – PiunikaWeb

In the last few years, most smartphone manufacturers have committed to support their devices for a certain time period.
Talking about software updates, one company that hasn’t changed a bit is Motorola. And honestly, the company’s stubbornness is not particularly positive.
When it comes to Android updates, the smartphone maker has always been shabby. The recently launched Motorola Edge 20 series is a perfect example of the same.

Considering Motorola’s history, Android Authority quickly reached out to the company and asked them about their plans to update the Edge 20 series.
What comes as a surprise is that Motorola said that the Edge 20 series would get one Android update and two years of security updates even after last year’s backlash.
Both reviewers and users had criticized last year’s Edge series because Motorola decided they would only provide one major Android OS update and two years of security patches.
What’s really sad is that the statement comes when companies like Samsung have plans to offer Android updates for up to three versions, with Google rumored to provide five major Android OS updates for future Pixel devices.
After Android Authority published the article citing Motorola would only provide one major Android OS update on Edge 20 devices, the company quickly went into damage control mode and told them that the information was incorrect.
In a follow-up statement, Motorola said that the Edge 20 Series would receive at least two Android OS updates and bi-monthly security patches.

Honestly, Motorola’s game is not up to the industry standard. At a time when device manufacturers are actually trying to extend shelf life, Motorola insists on doing the opposite.
Last year, when they were asked why they are cutting on updates and support, the company told Android Authority,
If [the company] does find that the device has a longer life cycle in the market, [they’ll] obviously review to see whether it needs more OS upgrades.
What they actually mean is that unless a lot of people buy the Motorola Edge 20 series devices, the company will not update those devices at all.
Nonetheless, we are sure that Motorola will bring Android 12 and Android 13 to the recently launched Edge 20 series.
In a statement to 9to5Google, the company said,
Motorola edge 20 pro, edge 20 and edge 20 lite will receive at least 2 major android OS upgrades and 2 years of bi-monthly security updates. These devices are protected by ThinkShield for mobile, which offers additional security protection. Essential features can also be updated via the PlayStore, which allows us to provide key updates more often. Users can expect ongoing support for software features like new My UX experiences, new camera features and new Ready For experiences, dependent on hardware compatibility.
Right now, the company is testing waters and trying to figure what might happen if they abandon their phones just a year after they are launched.
In the long term, the only possibility is that Motorola will lose its customer base and end up like Blackberry did.
