The launch of the Nothing Phone (2) is closer than expected. Just recently, Carl Pei welcomed Kyle Kiang, a former OnePlus exec, to the team. Kiang will play the Vice President role in North America and handle the global launch of the upcoming Nothing phone. This big announcement is enough to believe that the phone is near its launch date.
Nonetheless, as the Nothing Phone (2) is getting closer and closer to release, speculations about the device have started to pick up their pace. The Phone (1) had a lot of hype around it. And to a large degree, the smartphone has managed to deliver. But will that be the case for the second-gen? Most importantly, can it keep up with the other flagships in terms of camera performance? Carl Pei has answers!
In a recent tweet, Carl Pei explained why he chose Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 for Nothing Phone (2). After all, we already have Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in current flagships. So, why opt for a last-gen SoC? Well, Pei starts off by stating that the SoC has been tested to perfection.
According to Carl Pei, it has seen continuous optimizations throughout its lifespan, making it more stable than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. In terms of the camera, the 8+ Gen 1 has an 18-bit image signal processor. That makes it capable of capturing over 4000 times more camera data than Nothing Phone (1).
📸 Next level camera: The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 features an 18-bit Image Signal Processor (ISP) capable of capturing over 4,000 times more camera data than the ISP used on Phone (1). As a result, the Phone (2) camera offers advanced features like Raw HDR and 4K recording at 60 fps.

Pei also states that Nothing Phone (2) will have advanced camera features for the SoC. That includes 4K recording at 60 FPS and RAW HDR. These are the features that were not available in Phone (1). Carl finishes his tweet by stating, “Sometimes the latest technology comes at a cost, which isn’t always justified.” And truth be told, he is correct.
