Apple’s new budget smartphone will be called the Apple iPhone 5C instead of iPhone 5S. The S in iPhone 3GS and 4S stood for speed, and the C in iPhone 5C might be Cost or Consumer.

A recent report from China Labor Watch, a New York-based labor rights organization gives out important details about the production of a low cost iPhone. In the report, the organization has mentioned a new plastic iPhone that is still not officially available in the consumer market.

The excerpt of the report reads:

Today’s work is to paste protective film on the iPhone’s plastic back cover to prevent it from being scratched on assembly lines. This iPhone model with a plastic cover will soon be released on the market by Apple.

The task is pretty easy, and I was able to work independently after a five-minute instruction from a veteran employee. It took around a minute to paste protective film on one rear cover. The new cell phone has not yet been put into mass production, so quantity is not as important. This makes our job more slow-paced than in departments that have begun mass production schedules.

To add to the advantages of this so called plastic iPhone, there have been various positive feedbacks from technical analysts. They feel that the product might bring in more consumers to the Apple ecosystem and will boost sales for Apple in emerging markets. Forrester analyst Charles Golvin said, “Producing a lower-cost model will enable more people in the world to afford an iPhone. Even in developed markets like the U.S., with operators reducing subsidies, many consumers are experiencing sticker shock as they comprehend the true cost of a smartphone.”

Golvin also added that this new iPhone could hit the market this fall and would be economically priced, about $299 for the contract-free version. The smartphone does not need to sport excellent hardware and features, but should be able to deliver quality.

In order to ensure that the Apple iPhone 5C not only attracts consumers, but also the device has to maintain a level of build and performance quality even though it might cost less than half the price of the Apple iPhone 5. The good part is that Apple should not have any problem trying to ensure all the above points. The Cupertino California-based company is expected to unveil the iPhone 5C later this year.
