Apple has recently introduced an updated version of its low-end 21.5 inch iMac for educational institutions at a very reasonable price. Apple has decided to take advantage of cheaper dual-core Intel Core i3 processor and integrated graphics in order to offer a cost efficient computer for students.
Apple has priced this new device at $1099 which is $200 cheaper than the entry level pricing for consumer models. This education only iMac has the model number ME699LL/A. This computer has a 500 GB hard drive and 4 GB of RAM. These numbers are big but let’s not forget that the low-end consumer model has double of this configuration.
This new iMac version for students will be replacing the previous $999 iMac for educational institutions, which was introduced about 18 months ago and was targeted towards budget-conscious schools. It is still not clear about when Apple will start offering this new iMac. Apple announced the new iMac quietly and hence might even start selling these devices quietly. The target consumer market will anyway keep proper track of this new computer.
This special edition iMac will be available for a price tag of $1099 but only for educational institutions and is not available for individuals making purchases through Apple’s educational discount program. So it is the institution and not the student who gets to benefit from this offer.
Currently the shipping time for this iMac has been estimated as 5 to 7 business days whereas all the other models available through the Apple Store for Educational Institutions has a shipping estimate of 3 to 5 days. On the contrary, the Consumer models have a much better shipping time which has been estimated to be 1 day.
