Starting August 16, 2013, Apple will be offering a $10 replacement program to consumers who replace their third party chargers in return for genuine Apple models. This is a limited-time offer and only valid from August 16 through October 18.

The Cupertino Calif.-based company is organizing this program in order to protect consumers who have been using third parties chargers and adapters. Recently, there was an incident wherein a Chinese woman named Ma Ailum was electrocuted when she was answering a call on her iPhone. Later it was found that she was not using a genuine Apple iPhone charger, and it was the main cause of the incident.

After the incident, Apple wants to ensure that none of the consumers should have to face similar consequences. Genuine Apple chargers and adapters are rigorously tested and build with a high level of quality that ensures safety. In order to avail the replacement offer, Apple asks consumers to bring their iDevices with them to the store. This way, the company will be able to provide service to genuine consumers but at the same time will keep non-iOS consumers at bay.

On its web page, Apple also explained that genuine power adapters and chargers undergo complex testing; hence regular Apple service providers will not be able to help consumers with the authenticity or safety of these accessories. “Due to the complexity of testing required to detect an unsafe or counterfeit adapter, Apple Retail and Apple Authorized Service Providers cannot advise you on the authenticity or safety of your adapter,” read the Apple web page.

Apple consumers should take this opportunity to get their third party chargers replaced for $10, and ensure their own safety. Remember that the program starts from August 16 and will continue through October 18.
