If you want to use a controller on PC, you just can’t beat the convenience of the Xbox gamepad. If you want a rock-solid plug-and-play experience, the Xbox controller is the obvious choice, and it’s definitely one of the best PC controllers around anyway – Microsoft revamped its controller after the Xbox One launched to accommodate its bumpers. , feel better and add Bluetooth connectivity. Thanks to the built-in Windows driver, you don’t need any special software for your PC (and most games) to immediately recognize your pad.
Well, there are a few ways to wirelessly connect your Xbox One controller and a few things to know about the different iterations of the controller and how exactly they work with your PC. Once upon a time, Microsoft didn’t support its own drivers on its own PC platform.
I needed hacked drivers and workarounds to use the excellent Xbox One controller with PC games. That’s no longer the case, with official drivers built right into Windows 10. While it’s simple, there’s more to it than just plugging it in. Here is a complete guide. (You might also want to check out our picks for the best Xbox One controller.)
For a quick plug-and-play option, get a micro USB cable. You need to make sure it’s not a charging-only cable, but the vast majority of cables aren’t limited to that function. If you’re having trouble, this is probably the first thing to check. Connect one end to your Control Pad and the other to your PC and you’re good to go. Windows 10 PCs will recognize the driver immediately, while Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 will automatically download and install the appropriate drivers, which doesn’t take long.
If you encounter problems, check with your device administrator for updates. It may not be set to download updates automatically. To do this, simply search for Device Manager, select Microsoft Xbox One Controller, right-click and select Update driver software, and then click Search automatically for updated software.
Windows 10 allows you to connect up to eight control panels, while Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 limit you to four. There is no audio driver support in Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, so forget about plugging in a headset. Windows 10 supports audio, but there are limitations. If you’re using an Xbox Chat headset, the number of pads you can connect is reduced to four. When using the Xbox Stereo Headset, you can only connect two pads at a time.
If your PC doesn’t have Xbox Wireless, you’ll need to get an Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows and plug it into a USB port. As with the USB cable option, Windows will automatically download and install the appropriate drivers. Power on your controller by pressing and holding the center guide button, then press the sync button on the top of the pad until the guide button flashes to let you know your controller is connected.
Windows 10 lets you connect eight wireless controllers, down to four if you’re using an Xbox Chat headset and just two if you have an Xbox Stereo headset connected.
Not all Xbox One controllers support Bluetooth, so you need to check whether your controller meets the requirements or not. Look at the plastic on top of your controller. If it extends down from the top of the controller and around the Guide button, it is not Bluetooth compatible. If the plastic is limited to a strip at the top where the bumpers are, good news! Your controller supports Bluetooth. Take a look at the image below for a more detailed explanation. The controller shown above does not support Bluetooth; the controller below does.
Turn on your controller by pressing the large Guide button in the center, then press and hold the Sync button for a few seconds. Switch to your PC and go to Settings, Devices, Bluetooth and other devices. Make sure it’s on and your controller will appear as a discoverable Bluetooth device. Select the controller and press Pair and you’re done. If you use Bluetooth, you can only connect one controller at a time, and you can’t use a headset with it.
