Grand Theft Auto 5 has grossed $800 million in 24 hours and has shattered all previous sales records in the world of video games.
GTA 5 has become the best-selling game of all time on day one. With a note released to investors, Take-Two announced that the title had grossed over $800 million in a single day.
If we do some math, the publisher has earned around $33 million each hour of the first 24 hours, $555,000 every minute, or $9,300 every second. The game has smashed the previous record held by the Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, which is of $500 million.
The marketing campaign is the key to the success of the title, which has lead to a hype grown dramatically in past few months. Thanks to the tremor of $800 million, the first effect were felt in the financial market. Rockstar Games shares gained 1.2% to $17.20 yesterday, and a rise of 12% since July.
Grand Theft Auto 5 just took few hours to get sensational results that are already achieved by its predecessor during the April 2008 – March 2009 with a volume of copies come in a single day that oscillates between 13 and 14 million. Hence, the figures are outpacing projections for as much as $1 billion at retail in the first month against $265 million of investment.
The figures do nothing but confirm that GTA 5 will be considered in all respects as the last true masterpiece for the current generation gaming. The title is currently available for Sony PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 only, although many rumors claim about the launch of the PC version that doesn’t seem too far away.
Now, it’s also reasonable to expect the arrival of new controversy on the content. Many believe, the game is too violent or potentially dangerous for children, and completely ignoring the 18+ classifications provided by PEGI or ESRB. Yesterday, the representatives of Hawick even registered their objection for using the name of the Scottish city within the game.
