Apple Ipad Pro vs. Microsoft Surface Pro 8 – SFGATE

2021 Apple 12.9-inch iPad Pro
With more people working remotely, the need for a device that combines the portability and interface of a tablet with the capability and size of a lap-top is on the rise. Everyone from business professionals to school teachers are finding new and exciting ways to use their super-tablets to blast through their to-do lists. However, choosing between the major players, Apple’s Ipad Pro and Microsoft’s Surface Pro 8, can be tricky, and usually involves taking stock of what type of work you intend to use your tablet for.
Aside from the difference in operating system, the most notable divergence between the Ipad Pro and Surface Pro 8, the Apple Ipad Pro retains its reputation as the go-to tablet for anyone working in design or other creative industries. On the other hand, the Microsoft Surface Pro 8 is optimized for working with large documents or spreadsheets, which makes it a better choice for professionals working in business or similar fields.
The Ipad Pro is Apple’s response to the consumer demand for tablets that erase the need for a computer. As with all Apple products, the Ipad Pro is thoughtfully designed and uniquely optimized for people who work in a visual industry. With an award-winning pencil and thousands of editing, painting, drawing and creative apps, the Ipad Pro is a designer’s paperless dream.
The latest Ipad Pro’s contain Apple’s powerful M1 processing chip. This is the same chip you will find in most of their computers, which means the Ipad Pro is capable of handling almost anything you throw at it, especially in the photo and video editing department.
The Ipad Pro is both slimmer and lighter than the Microsoft Surface. Despite it’s smaller size, the Ipad Pro also offers more storage options than the Surface Pro 8, with up to 2 terabytes of on-board capacity. Additionally, the Ipad Pro easily integrates with all other Apple products, which makes sharing files from one device to another a simple task. Included in this inter-device connectivity is a simple and easy-to-use backup and restoration software that keeps your data safe.
The Ipad Pro also features Apple’s ultra-premium liquid retina XDR display, which offers a greater variety of color than the Microsoft Surface Pro 8, or the more expensive Surface Pro X model. Plus, the liquid retina XDR display can achieve up to 1,000 nits of brightness, which is significantly more than the 450 nits the Surface Pro 8 delivers. To top it all off, the Ipad Pro has 5 individually built-in microphones, and an outstanding array of camera features, which include 4k video and 1080p slo-mo.
Unlike the Surface Pro 8, the Ipad Pro does not come with any sort of built-in stand. Additional accessories from Apple, such as the magic keyboard, aren’t cheap either. In a similar vein, the Ipad Pro only has one port, a Thunderbolt 4 USB 4 port. Getting more connectivity options will require an additional purchase.
Apple has yet to allow the Ipad Pro to run Mac apps, so many of the apps you use on your Ipad may still be mobile versions that won’t take advantage of the M1 chip or offer the same capability that their desktop counterparts do.
Released in 2012, not long after the first Ipad, the Microsoft Surface has evolved over the years in tandem with the Ipad family, and the Pro 8 is the Ipad Pro’s direct competitor. Powered by a quad-core Intel processor, the Microsoft Surface Pro 8 has the same chip found in many high-performance PC desktops, and runs the same windows operating system used by the business world.
One of the best features of the Surface 8 is the integrated kickstand, which makes it easy to prop the tablet on your lap or a flat surface. Additionally, the Surface Pro also offers users two USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports, a 3.5mm headphone jack, as well as a Surface Connect port. The unique Surface port provides better dual-monitor support than the Ipad Pro does.
Although the Apple Pencil has more overall features than the Surface Slim Pen 2, Surface 8 is equipped with haptic feedback, which makes the Slim Pen 2 more precise and easy to use. This is especially helpful if you are in the market for something that will mimic the feel of writing on paper.
While the Surface claims to offer 16 hours of mixed-use battery life, most tests have revealed that it can handle about 8 hours of web surfing before the battery drains. The Ipad, on the other hand, is capable of browsing the web for 10 hours.
Secondly, the Microsoft Surface Pro 8 doesn’t have as high quality of a camera as the Ipad Pro does, with 10 and 5 megapixels on the rear and front facing cameras respectively. Moreover, the Surface Pro 8 also lacks robust speakers, especially in comparison to the 4 studio-quality speakers the Ipad Pro offers.
Lastly, the Microsoft Surface Pro 8 doesn’t have the ability to be connected to a cellular network, which means that you can only go online when there is wifi available. For people who constantly travel, this can be a deal breaker.
When it comes down to the bottom line, choosing between the Ipad Pro and the Surface Pro 8 is an exercise in nuance. Both tablets are as powerful as most computers, capable of many of the same functions and cost almost the same. However, the top end of the Ipad Pro lineup is more expensive than that of the Microsoft Surface Pro 8
That being said, there are a few more relevant differences between the two. First and foremost, if you are looking for something simple to use for entertainment purposes, the Ipad Pro is better. It’s interface is famously approachable, and the screen is exceptional. In that vein, the Ipad Pro, thanks to it’s screen, camera, incredible storage and speakers, is the ideal choice for anyone who works in design.
On the other hand, Microsoft has dominated the business world for decades now, and there is no question that the Surface Pro 8 will integrate with other PC platforms more efficiently than the Ipad. If you regularly use Word, Excel or other Microsoft products, the Surface Pro 8 is your best bet.
