After several months of speculations, here is the official Facebook – modern — app for Windows. On the debut day of the Windows 8.1, the Windows Store published the English version of the app while the localized versions will be available in the coming hours.
A myriad of third-party apps were available on the store so far. Finally, the Facebook has developed the official version that offers all the functionality needed to interact with friends on the social network. The app is available on the Windows Store for Windows 8 but cannot be installed. It is mandatory to upgrade the operating system to version 8.1 RTM build.
Facebook for Windows 8 – Windows 8.1 to be exact — has the same design of the app which is available for Windows Phone 8. The layout has three columns with the News Feed in the center, aside a left sidebar gives access to the individual sections, and chat on the right side. As the mobile version of the app, there are three buttons for status updates, photos and check-in on top of the news flow. In the upper right hand user can see the friend requests, incoming messages and notifications. The side panel shows — from top to bottom — the user’s name, display picture, favorites, pages, groups and settings.
In a similar way to many apps for Windows 8.1, the app also integrates a Facebook search capabilities and supports Snap View — additional window size options to resize the app to a tall or narrow view. The app has the ability to snap down up to 500px only, hopefully we may see narrow view (320px view) for chat addicts like me.
The app also leverages share contract of the Charms Bar so that the user can publish a photo on the social network received in an e-mail message without intervening the current workflow, however you can’t share the stuff from other apps to Facebook.
Facebook for Windows 8.1 can run in the background, show status updates within the live tile on the Start screen and notifications on the Lock screen. The app is suitable for touch – missing mouse over events and most importantly it’s add free. It does almost everything like the website, except few things like downloading/uploading files within the app, send stickers and so forth.
