Overview

CloudStack coordinates virtual machines, network services, accounts, and resource use across IaaS environments. It is built to scale across geographically distributed data centers, with capacity to manage tens of thousands of physical servers. That makes it a fit for organizations operating infrastructure at provider scale, rather than teams seeking a hosted service that removes the work of running a cloud.

Operators can manage environments through a web UI, command-line tools, or a RESTful API. Optional AWS EC2- and S3-compatible APIs can help align CloudStack with workflows using those interfaces. The Apache License, Version 2.0 removes a software license charge, but not the costs of infrastructure, administration, and security.

Key features

Compute and management

CloudStack supports XenServer or XCP, KVM, Hyper-V, and VMware ESXi with vSphere; its supported hypervisors also include BareMetal, LXC, and Xen Project. That breadth can help organizations manage varied infrastructure under one platform, but does not eliminate the expertise needed to operate each environment. Live migration, high availability, and disaster recovery add useful infrastructure controls for teams that need to manage continuity as well as routine compute orchestration.

Resource accounting and account management provide controls for allocating and tracking cloud resources. An open API, command-line tools, and web interface give teams different ways to integrate and administer the platform; optional EC2- and S3-compatible APIs offer another route for systems already using those interfaces.

Identity, storage, and integrations

Authentication options include OAuth2 single sign-on, two-factor authentication, TOTP, and SAML and LDAP. Storage support covers iSCSI and NFS, Ceph RBD with KVM, volume encryption, snapshots, and storage tiering. The project’s integrations include Terraform, Ansible, Kubernetes, Prometheus, VMware NSX, Ceph, MinIO, and billing portals. This mix suits teams building an operational toolchain around their cloud, though the platform’s breadth comes with integration and administration work.

Long Term Support releases receive bug and security fixes for 18 months after the main release. That offers a defined maintenance window, but teams must plan their upgrade and support strategy around it. Community help is available through the project mailing list, and some companies offer commercial support.

Pricing

Apache CloudStack — 0.00 USD per free. The free, open-source IaaS software is self-hosted and includes API access; no commercial plan pricing is listed. It is suited to teams that can supply and operate their own infrastructure. The free price does not include a hosted cloud or remove staffing, hardware, or security costs.

There are no published seat, usage, or trial terms to weigh. The practical limit is operational: CloudStack assigns operators responsibility for defenses against denial-of-service and brute-force attacks, monitoring, and securing hosts, management servers, system VMs, and routers. Potential vulnerabilities in released versions should be reported by email to the Apache Software Foundation security team.

Platforms

CloudStack is self-hosted and supports Linux, web access, and APIs. Its deployment model is self-hosted, so organizations retain control over where the cloud runs and also own the work of maintaining that environment.

Who it's for

The project identifies cloud solution providers, managed service providers, telcos, and enterprises as audiences. These organizations can benefit from broad infrastructure controls, multiple access methods, and support for large, distributed environments when they have the operational capacity to use them. Teams looking for a managed platform or unwilling to own infrastructure security should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Broad hypervisor support: Options spanning KVM, Hyper-V, VMware, Xen, LXC, and BareMetal give infrastructure teams flexibility across environments.
Multiple management paths: Web, CLI, and API access, plus optional EC2- and S3-compatible APIs, support different administrative and integration approaches.
Large-scale design: Management of tens of thousands of servers across geographically distributed data centers suits provider and enterprise deployments.
Operator-owned security: Teams must provide monitoring and protect the platform’s hosts, management servers, system VMs, and routers, including defenses against DoS and brute-force attacks.
Defined LTS window: Bug and security fixes continue for 18 months after the main release, requiring teams to account for that period in maintenance planning.

Alternatives

For teams whose main need is coordinating infrastructure, Kubernetes, or configuration workflows, these options may fit better; they are not direct substitutes for every CloudStack deployment.

Cloudify offers a free Community plan with no time limit, but requires Docker or a VM setup and access to a cloud provider to run workloads. Choose it when that workflow fits better than running a CloudStack IaaS environment.
Google Config Sync has a free plan included with Google Kubernetes Engine, requiring a supported cluster version and fleet registration. It is a fit when those GKE prerequisites match the environment.
Kubermatic Kubernetes Platform has a free, open-source Community Edition under Apache License 2.0, alongside a consumption-based Enterprise Edition with custom pricing. Consider it when a Kubernetes platform is the primary requirement.
KubeSphere describes its free Community Edition as an enterprise-grade open-source Kubernetes container platform. Choose it when that container-platform focus is the better match.
OpenNebula offers a Community Edition and an Enterprise Subscription; consider it as another cloud platform option.
Xynvera is a paid option for teams comparing alternatives.
Control Plane offers usage-based monthly pricing without contracts, minimums, or lock-ins, with CPU and memory rates. Consider it when that billing model better suits the workload.
Cycle has a $500.00 USD per month Lite plan with four servers, four team members, 100GB image storage, seven days of metric retention, and 24-hour metric downsampling. It may suit teams whose needs fit those stated limits.

Verdict

Choose Apache CloudStack if you are a provider or enterprise that needs self-hosted IaaS controls across a large or mixed-hypervisor environment and can staff its operation. Its breadth, scale, and free software plan are the case for it; the need to secure and maintain the full stack yourself is the reason to look elsewhere if you want managed operations or less infrastructure responsibility.
