Overview

Spell Up combines individual spelling practice with classroom tools. A no-sign-up web demo lets prospective users try its exercises and word lists, while signing in is required to save selected lists and track progress. That makes it easier to judge the practice format before committing, but the demo is not a substitute for an account-based learning record.

The service offers personalized word lists and adaptive learning, with progress syncing across web, iOS, and Android. That cross-device continuity is useful for students moving between home and school devices. Teachers can assign custom lists and monitor progress, giving the product a practical classroom role beyond individual drills.

Key features

Two levels of practice: Easy Mode pairs audio pronunciation with multiple-choice questions, definition matching, immediate feedback, and three lives. The scaffolding can help learners build familiarity without making every attempt a high-pressure spelling test. Competition Mode instead asks for typed answers from audio and offers hints about length, letters, and definitions. That is the better fit for learners who want a more demanding spelling challenge, though hints still provide support.

Targeted lists and practice: The word-list collection includes 2024 Scripps One Bee, Two Bee, and Three Bee lists, as well as an SAT list. Teachers can assign their own lists, which makes the app more adaptable than a fixed sequence when a class is following a particular curriculum or preparing for a competition. Google Play also describes dictation, word formation, contextual usage, pattern recognition, corrections, and explanations of spelling rules, broadening practice beyond recalling a word from sound alone.

Progress and motivation: Progress tracking and cross-device sync help learners and teachers follow ongoing work. The Google Play listing also describes achievement badges, a streak calendar, and progress visualization. These features can make practice easier to monitor, but the service collects studied words, learning progress, usage patterns, device identifiers, and diagnostic logs.

Offline practice: Google Play says practice can continue without a constant internet connection. That can suit learners whose access is intermittent, while sync across devices remains part of the online experience.

Pricing

Spell Up uses a freemium model and has a free plan. The homepage also offers a demo without sign-up, but full access requires an account. The terms say some services may require a subscription; subscription pricing, duration, and any free-plan caps are not established here, so teams should confirm the applicable offer before adopting it.

Subscriptions automatically renew unless turned off at least 24 hours before the current period ends. Fees are non-refundable except where applicable law requires otherwise; App Store refund requests go through Apple Support. Those terms matter especially for families managing a child’s account or schools paying for recurring access.

Platforms

Spell Up is available on Android, iOS, and the web, with progress syncing across those platforms. That mix suits classrooms using a combination of phones, tablets, and browsers. The web demo is a useful first step for schools that want to assess the exercise formats before asking learners to sign up.

Who it's for

Spell Up is a sensible fit for teachers who need custom list assignments and student progress monitoring, and for students preparing for spelling competitions or standardized tests. Parents, homeschool educators, literacy specialists, and English learners are also named as intended users. Users must be at least 13; those under 18 need parent or guardian permission. The service says it is not intended for children under 13.

Privacy-conscious schools should note that Supabase handles authentication, data storage, and session management, while PostHog provides usage analytics; Google and Apple are also named for sign-in. Spell Up says it does not sell personal information, and describes its security measures as industry-standard while acknowledging that absolute security cannot be guaranteed.

Pros and cons

Cons: Subscription renewal and non-refundable fees require attention, while subscription terms may apply to some services.
Cons: The service collects learning and device-related data, a consideration for educators and families weighing student privacy.

Verdict

Spell Up is a strong fit for teachers and learners who want flexible spelling practice, custom lists, and progress that follows them across devices.
