ChordU

Overview

ChordU is a song-analysis tool for players who want chords and notation alongside practice controls and export options. Its strongest fit is musicians learning or arranging songs across guitar, piano, ukulele, or mandolin; it is less suitable for anyone who needs upload-based features without a paid subscription.

ChordU’s breadth is more compelling than a single chord lookup: users can compare chord versions, work with note displays, and listen to chord playback. But the split between free access and Premium matters, particularly for people who want to analyze local audio or use MusicOnly with uploads.

Key features

Song chords and notation

ChordU recognizes chords from audio and synchronizes them to generate notation. For YouTube songs, users find a track on YouTube, copy its link, and search for it in ChordU. Simplified, advanced, bass, and edited chord versions give players different ways into a song rather than forcing one arrangement on every skill level or instrument.

Note displays include treble and bass clefs, with simple, music, and bass note versions. The range is useful for players who want to move between chord-oriented and note-oriented views, though the service’s personal, non-commercial usage terms rule it out for commercial song use.

Practice and export tools

Chord diagrams cover guitar, piano, ukulele, and mandolin, with chord audio playback for hearing the result. A progression generator and voicing explorer extend the product beyond song lookup into working with harmonic ideas. MusicOnly controls vocals, bass, drums, and instruments and can export a mixed audio download. That is a substantial practice and arrangement feature, but using MusicOnly on locally uploaded music requires Premium.

The website offers PDF chord and note sheets, MIDI files, and synthesized notes as WAV, along with chord chart export. These formats make it easier to take material into a practice or production workflow; Premium members can download chords without a stated monthly limit. ChordU says sensitive information is encrypted with SSL and transactions go through a gateway rather than being stored on its servers. Users can request data deletion by email, with processing taking up to seven days. Help documentation, sales, technical support, and media inquiry routes are also provided.

Pricing

ChordU uses a freemium model. The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and offers limited access features. It is a reasonable way to try the song-analysis workflow, but users who need local uploads or MusicOnly for those uploads will have to move to Premium.

Premium costs 5.00 USD per month, billed $ 5.00/Month. It includes all ChordU features, uploads, MusicOnly mode, and downloads. For a player who regularly works from local music or wants the upload-related tools and downloads, this is the clear paid option; the stated price is monthly, and no other billing term is given.

Starter has custom pricing and includes paid features, but does not include song uploads or notes/MIDI downloads. It may suit someone who wants paid capabilities without those specific workflows, but it is a poor match for users whose reason to pay is local-file analysis or downloadable note and MIDI material. No seat or usage quota terms are stated for these plans.

Platforms

ChordU is available on web, Android, and iOS. The website is the stated route for PDF, MIDI, and WAV downloads, while mobile availability gives users access beyond a desktop browser. The supplied platform range makes it a more flexible choice than web-only chord tools, though the specific export route remains web-based.

Who it's for

ChordU is best for individual players who want song chords, alternate arrangements, notation, instrument-specific diagrams, and audio-oriented practice tools in one place. It is especially relevant when the player values multiple chord and note views or needs downloadable formats. Teams or commercial users should be cautious: the terms limit song and chord use to personal, non-commercial use, and no team-seat model is described.

It is not the best choice for a free-only workflow centered on local uploads, since uploads and MusicOnly for those uploads require Premium. Nor is it a fit for commercial reuse under the stated usage terms.

Pros and cons

• Pros: Multiple chord versions and treble- and bass-clef note views make it possible to choose a representation suited to the player and song.
• Pros: Guitar, piano, ukulele, and mandolin diagrams, chord playback, a progression generator, and a voicing explorer combine lookup with practice and harmony exploration.
• Pros: PDF, MIDI, and WAV exports provide practical ways to carry material beyond the service; Premium chord downloads have no stated monthly limit.
• Cons: Free access is limited, and local uploads plus MusicOnly on uploaded tracks require the 5.00 USD per month Premium plan.
• Cons: Starter excludes uploads and notes/MIDI downloads, so it does not cover two important workflows for users who pay to work with local songs or export notation.
• Cons: Song and chord use is restricted to personal, non-commercial use, limiting professional or commercial applications.

Alternatives

Chord Finder Software is a broader directory starting point if you want to compare chord-finding tools rather than choose a single product.

Chord Analyser is worth considering for an Android or iOS-focused option with a free plan and no time limit, especially if ChordU’s paid upload requirement is the sticking point.

Chordio is the alternative to consider on iOS or macOS when real-time MIDI chord detection and an on-screen keyboard matter more than ChordU’s song-and-notation workflow.

ChordProgressions.org suits a web-based, free in-browser studio if progression work is the priority; playback and editing require JavaScript.

chords·lol is a free web alternative described as an educational and reference project, rather than a tool centered on ChordU’s audio recognition and exports.

ChordSequence is a strong alternative for users who want all features free, no paywall or usage limit, and WAV and MIDI export on Android or web.

OtoTheory is an option for iOS or web users who want a free tier and trial; its free plan is limited to three local sketch saves and excludes MIDI/audio export.

SongEngine is the relevant alternative for macOS or Windows users seeking a free core plug-in with 60+ presets.

Chord Library is a web-based alternative for buyers who want one-time-purchase chord and scale reference PDFs, rather than ChordU’s song-analysis workflow.

Verdict

Choose ChordU if you are a player who wants multiple chord and notation views, instrument-specific diagrams, practice controls, and exports across web and mobile. Its key advantage is bringing those song-learning pieces together; its clearest reason to look elsewhere is the Premium gate on uploads and upload-based MusicOnly, alongside personal-use-only terms. For that workflow, the 5.00 USD per month Premium plan is the relevant choice, while the limited Free plan is best treated as an entry point rather than a full substitute.
