Motorola Edge 40 Pro with SD 8 Gen 2 SoC, 165Hz display, and 125W charging to launch soon

Motorola, which hasn’t had a strong foothold in the high-end smartphone market in recent years, may be making a comeback with the launch of the Edge 40 Pro. This new phone is a global version of the X40, which was released in China at the end of 2022. The Edge 40 Pro is equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, a 6.67-inch display that can handle up to 165Hz refresh rate, and an IP68 rating for protection against weather and dust.

The 6.67-inch FHD+ pOLED display on the Edge 40 Pro boasts several features that enhance the viewing experience. It is the first Motorola phone to support Dolby Vision HDR (and HDR10+) playback, ensuring bright and accurate viewing of HDR movies and games. The phone also incorporates Dolby Atmos sound and a new feature called Moto Spatial Sound, which enhances the audio experience for music, movies, and games. Moto Spatial Sound seems to be similar to Apple’s spatial audio, providing an immersive surround sound experience.

Another highlight of the Edge 40 is its curved screen design that curves inward, including at the top, which Moto claims provides unparalleled comfort. The front of the phone is coated with an anti-fingerprint layer, while the back features an anti-glare glass inlay, and both sides are protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus.

As already stated, the Edge 40 Pro is equipped with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, along with LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0, which is the fastest RAM and storage available at present. This configuration ensures seamless performance for demanding games and tasks. In addition, the 4,600 mAh battery can be charged at a remarkable speed of up to 125W, allowing users to fully charge their phone in just 23 minutes, comparable to the top-performing Android devices.

Coming to optics, the Edge 40 Pro boasts a triple high-resolution camera system consisting of a 50 MP wide camera with optical image stabilization and phase-detect AF for each pixel, a 50 MP ultrawide camera, and a 12 MP 2x telephoto camera. Additionally, it has a 60 MP selfie pinhole camera on the front. The device can record videos in 8K30p, 4K HDR10+ at 30fps, and 4K at up to 60fps, and includes AI features such as auto smile capture, Google Lens integration, and auto night vision.

Motorola’s statement in today’s press release regarding the expansion of the Edge family in North America is a bit ambiguous, leaving it unclear whether the Edge 40 Pro will be released in the US. However, Motorola appears to be committed to expanding the Edge lineup in North America in some form.
