In an exciting announcement, Meta has revealed its highly anticipated Quest 3 VR headset, marking the next generation of untethered VR/MR devices. The Quest 3 boasts a range of upgrades, including improved performance, a higher resolution display, enhanced controllers, and an advanced positional tracking system. Notably, it offers backward compatibility with existing Quest software, ensuring a seamless transition for users.
The Quest 3 showcases Meta’s commitment to pushing technological boundaries, featuring its “highest resolution display yet.” Although specific details regarding the display resolution and refresh rate have not been disclosed, expectations are high given the Quest 2’s impressive specifications of 1832 x 1920 pixels per eye resolution and a refresh rate range of 72-120 Hz. Meta has also managed to slim down the optics assembly, resulting in a thinner and more comfortable device. However, comfort is subjective and dependent on individual ergonomic preferences.
To support the increased resolution, the Quest 3 incorporates a next-generation Snapdragon system-on-chip (SoC), offering more than double the graphical performance compared to its predecessor, the Quest 2. While Meta hasn’t provided precise details about the exact SoC, speculation points to the possibility of an even newer or custom chipset, surpassing the Snapdragon XR2 used in the Quest 2.

Meta has made significant advancements in the sensor and tracking systems of the Quest 3. Equipped with three pill-shaped sensors on the front panel, the device incorporates dual 4 MP outward facing RGB cameras for stereoscopic visuals and a depth sensor for improved tracking accuracy. Additionally, the Quest 3 supports hand tracking right out of the box, enhancing the immersive mixed reality experience provided by Meta Reality technology.

Furthermore, Meta has redesigned its Touch Plus controllers for the Quest 3. These controllers feature improved ergonomics and eliminate the need for external tracking rings. While Meta has shared initial details about the Quest 3, more information will be unveiled on September 27th. Interestingly, this announcement coincides with Apple’s anticipated unveiling of its own VR/MR headset, raising questions about Meta’s strategic timing. The Quest 3 is expected to hit the market later this year, starting at a competitive price of $499 for the 128 GB version. Users seeking additional storage options can opt for a higher-priced model.
