Prepare The Song Before Separation
- Use the highest-quality copy you are allowed to process. A compressed or already edited file gives the separator less information to work with.
- Keep an untouched copy. Work from a duplicate so you can compare the extracted vocal with the full mix.
- Decide what you need: an isolated vocal, an instrumental, or both. If you plan to remix, extra stems such as drums or bass can be useful.
- Check the service’s upload duration, file-size, export, and download limits before starting. Those limits differ sharply between tools.

Spleeter
Choose Spleeter if you are comfortable with self-hosted tools. Its command-line and Python workflows support two-, four-, and five-stem modes, batch processing, Docker, and custom source-separation model training. It has no packaged web or desktop application, and its Python API is not a hosted web API.
Open-Unmix

Run The Separation
- Upload the duplicate of your song and select the vocal-separation or vocal-and-instrumental option shown by the tool.
- Wait for processing, then preview the vocal stem alone and with the instrumental stem. Listen for backing vocals, reverb tails, doubled parts, or music leaking into pauses.
- If the tool offers model, quality, or stem choices, make one change at a time and compare previews. Do not assume a higher-priced plan automatically removes every artifact.
- Export the vocal and instrumental files in the formats the service provides. If downloads are unavailable on your plan, select a service or plan that explicitly includes them.
- Trim the starts and ends together so the stems stay synchronized. Name them clearly, such as song-vocals and song-instrumental.
Fix Common Separation Problems
- Music remains under the vocal: try another supported model or tool, then compare the new preview with the original mix.
- Vocal sounds watery: use the highest-quality source available and avoid repeatedly re-encoding the exported file.
- Backing vocals disappear: choose a tool that explicitly supports backing-vocal output, such as PhonicMind when backing vocals are present.
- The stems drift out of sync: export both stems from the same processing job and align their first samples before editing.
- You cannot download the result: verify plan limits first. LALAL.AI Starter previews and PhonicMind Sing, for example, do not provide the same download access as higher export plans.

Only upload audio you have permission to process. Before publishing an isolated vocal, remix, cover, sample, or instrumental, check the song owner’s rights and the separation service’s current terms.
