You can make a song without reading notes or knowing chords: describe the sound you want in plain language, generate a draft, then improve one clear thing at a time. With Udio, you can start from a text prompt or lyrics, edit lyrics, extend or transform audio, and refine it in Sessions. Think in terms of mood, energy, voice, and what changes from the beginning to the end—not music theory vocabulary.
Start With A Simple Song Brief
Before opening the generator, decide what the listener should hear and feel. Use everyday descriptions; you do not need to name a key, chord, time signature, or instrument you cannot identify.

- Purpose: a personal song, a video bed, or a rough idea to develop further.
- Feeling: for example, calm but hopeful, tense, playful, or reflective.
- Voice: instrumental, a solo singer, or a group sound. Avoid naming a real singer as a shortcut.
- Motion: steady and relaxed, driving, or gradually building.
- Shape: a quiet opening, a fuller middle, and a clear ending.
Pick only a few defining details. A prompt overloaded with moods and directions can be harder to judge than a focused one.
Make A First Draft In Udio
- Open Udio and enter a text prompt. Describe the purpose, feeling, voice, motion, and song shape in one or two sentences. For example: “A reflective song for a late-night drive, with a warm solo vocal and a steady, unhurried feel. Start sparse, grow fuller in the middle, and finish gently.” This is an example of language to try, not a guaranteed sound.
- Add lyrics if words matter. Write a short idea in your own words, such as a scene, a memory, or a phrase you want the song to return to. Keep the wording direct. If you do not have lyrics yet, describe the subject and ask for an instrumental draft instead.
- Generate a draft and listen for the main mismatch. Ask yourself whether the mood, vocal feel, and overall motion are close to your brief. Do not try to fix everything at once.
- Change one instruction and try again. If the result is too intense, replace “driving” with “gentle and restrained.” If it feels too static, ask for a gradual build. Specific plain-language corrections make it easier to tell what changed.
Shape The Song Without Musical Jargon
Once the overall direction is close, work on the parts a listener notices. Udio lists lyric editing, audio extension and transformation, and Sessions for timeline refinement. The exact controls available in your account may vary, so check the interface for the current options.

Fix A Lyric Or Vocal Moment
Edit a line that sounds awkward or does not express the intended idea. Keep the replacement similar in length and easy to say aloud. If you are using a voice reference, use only a voice you have permission to use and follow Udio’s terms.
Extend A Draft With A Clear Next Event
When extending audio, describe what should happen next in ordinary terms: “keep the same reflective mood, add energy gradually, then settle into a quiet ending.” Listen to the transition. If it feels abrupt, revise the instruction around the change rather than adding unrelated details.

Refine The Timeline By Listening
Use Sessions to refine the timeline if that option is available. Identify the moment that needs attention by listening, then make a focused change to that section. A useful note is “the middle should feel fuller, while the opening stays quiet,” rather than a technical instruction about arrangement.
Use A Repeatable Listening Checklist
- Does it match the brief? Keep or revise the mood, voice, or energy description.
- Can you understand the words? Simplify lyrics that sound crowded or unclear.
- Does the song change as intended? Describe where it should grow, hold steady, or wind down.
- Is the ending usable? Ask for a resolved, gentle, or abrupt ending according to your purpose.
Save the prompt that produced the closest draft and change one detail per attempt. This makes the process easier to steer without needing to know why a particular musical choice works.
