No. “Copyright-free” is not a reliable blanket description of AI-generated music. In the United States, the Copyright Office says music generated entirely by AI is not copyrightable, and a prompt alone does not make the user its author. Human-authored contributions to a mixed work may be protected. Separately, a service may grant permission to use a track under its own license; that permission does not by itself make the track copyrightable or guarantee that every use is cleared.
What “Copyright-Free” Can Mean
People use the phrase to mean different things: no copyright applies, no royalties are due, or a license permits particular uses. Those are not interchangeable. A track can be offered as “royalty-free” or for commercial use while still being governed by a service’s license and terms. For a specific release, read the applicable terms and save the license or other proof the service provides.

What To Check Before You Use a Track
- Your use: Check whether the terms cover the intended destination, such as a monetized video, podcast, game, advertisement, client project, or music release. Do not infer permission for one use from permission for another.
- Your plan and timing: Some services distinguish free and paid use. Confirm which plan applies, when the track was generated or downloaded, and whether the license continues to cover the project.
- Human material: Use only lyrics, recordings, samples, and voices you have permission to use. For an identifiable person’s voice or an imitation of an artist, get consent and check the service’s terms; a tool’s commercial-use statement does not establish consent.
- Proof and disclosure: Keep the track, prompt, project files, plan details, and license evidence. Check the platform where you publish for any AI disclosure rules.

A Practical Clearance Workflow
- Define the release: Write down where the music will appear, whether it will be monetized, and whether it is client work or part of a commercial product.
- Choose the service and plan: Match the stated license to that release. If a material use is not covered in the available terms, check with the vendor before publishing.
- Make the track from material you can use: Write your own lyrics and prompts. Do not upload recordings or ask for a recognizable person’s voice without consent and rights to the material.
- Keep a record: Save the generation date, plan, prompt, downloaded file, terms, and any license certificate or attribution requirement.
- Check the destination’s rules: Spotify announced protections against unauthorized vocal impersonation and support for AI disclosures in credits. YouTube requires disclosure for realistic altered or synthetic content that could be mistaken for a real person’s performance. Check the current publishing rules for your release.
Prompts And Editing Do Not Settle Rights
A prompt can help you get a useful result, but it does not make you the author of music generated entirely by AI under the U.S. Copyright Office’s stated approach. If you need a track for a specific project, describe its practical role—for example, “instrumental background music for a two-minute product video, restrained energy, no vocals”—then review the generated result and the service’s license for that use. This is a creative brief, not a rights-clearing method.
If you add original lyrics, record a performance, or make other human-authored contributions, keep those materials and document your work. The Office says human-authored parts of a mixed work may qualify for protection; it does not say that every edit or prompt makes the entire AI-generated track copyrightable.
