About
Ente Photos is an end-to-end encrypted service for backing up and accessing photos across devices. Photos and metadata are encrypted on the user’s device before upload, and Ente says it cannot view them. New photos can back up in the background, while on-device AI recognizes faces and photo elements to support natural-language search. Users can revisit curated memories, share encrypted albums or browser links with password or expiry settings, and let others add photos, including people without an Ente account. Ente documents imports from Google Photos, Apple Photos, Amazon Photos and local storage; the desktop app supports incremental export. The free plan includes 10 GB and one replica. Paid plans start with Starter at 2.49 USD per month for 50 GB. Subscribers can share storage with up to five family members, each with a separate private space. Ente says it stores three encrypted copies across three providers and three EU locations. If a user loses both their password and recovery key while logged out of all devices, Ente says the account and data cannot be recovered.
Who it is for
It suits people seeking encrypted photo backup across devices, with imports, sharing and on-device search. Families may value shared storage with separate private spaces on paid plans.
What is good
- Encrypts photos and metadata on-device before upload
- On-device AI supports face and natural-language search
- Imports from Google Photos, Apple Photos, Amazon Photos and local storage
- Browser sharing links can have a password or expiry
What to know first
- Losing both password and recovery key can make data unrecoverable
- Free plan includes 10 GB and one replica
Verdict
Ente Photos combines encrypted backup with search, sharing and library import options across platforms. Keep the recovery key accessible: the stated account recovery limit makes losing both credentials consequential.
