About
Flomesh Service Mesh (FSM) provides traffic management and service governance for microservices running on Kubernetes. It uses the Flomesh Pipy proxy, automatically injecting it as a sidecar into onboarded applications. FSM supports traffic shifting, ingress and egress, and Kubernetes Gateway API capabilities, as well as HTTP, TCP, gRPC, and MQTT traffic. For service-to-service security, it enables mutual TLS and fine-grained access policies. Certificate management can use Tresor, cert-manager, or HashiCorp Vault. Prometheus and Grafana integrations are listed as stable, while Jaeger distributed tracing is beta. Integration guides also cover Dapr and service discovery through Consul, Eureka, and Nacos. FSM supports x86 and ARM architectures and multi-cluster Kubernetes connectivity using the MCS API, though multicluster is marked alpha. It is open source and free, with self-hosted deployment. Installation requires Kubernetes 1.19 or later; version 1.1 is listed for Kubernetes 1.19 through 1.24.
Who it is for
FSM suits teams running Kubernetes microservices that need traffic controls, mTLS, or service governance. Its documented integrations and self-hosted deployment may fit stacks using Prometheus, Grafana, or established discovery registries.
What is good
- Automatically injects the Pipy proxy as a sidecar
- Supports HTTP, TCP, gRPC, and MQTT
- Enables mTLS and fine-grained service access policies
- Certificate options include cert-manager and HashiCorp Vault
- Supports x86 and ARM architectures
What to know first
- Requires Kubernetes 1.19 or later
- Jaeger distributed tracing is beta
- Multicluster is marked alpha
- ReferenceGrant is not supported
Verdict
FSM combines traffic management, service security, and multiple certificate options for Kubernetes workloads. Check its Kubernetes version range and the lifecycle status of multicluster and tracing features against your requirements.
