Google Kubernetes Engine
About
Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE) is a managed environment for running containerized applications. It manages each Kubernetes cluster’s control plane through its lifecycle, from creation to deletion. Teams can use Autopilot to hand node provisioning, scaling, scheduling, and security features to Google, or manage nodes themselves. Autopilot also offers automatic capacity right-sizing and per-pod pricing. GKE supports GPU and TPU workloads, with AI Hypercomputer integration for machine learning and high-performance computing. The product page states support for clusters of up to 65,000 nodes. Security features include a dashboard for cluster misconfigurations and risks, agentless scanning for critical vulnerabilities, workload isolation through GKE Sandbox, and hardware-based encryption for data in use with Confidential GKE Nodes. Fleets and Teams help organize clusters and assign resources across teams. GKE also supports conformant attached Kubernetes clusters and says applications can run unmodified on existing on-premises hardware or in public cloud. Pricing includes a free tier and paid plans from $9/mo.
Who it is for
GKE suits platform builders, enterprise developer platforms, and teams training or serving AI models. It also fits teams that need managed Kubernetes cluster operations or multi-cluster organization.
What is good
- Autopilot automates node provisioning, scaling, and scheduling.
- Supports GPU and TPU workloads.
- Security dashboard and agentless vulnerability scanning.
- Supports clusters with up to 65,000 nodes.
- Applications can run unmodified on-premises or in public cloud.
What to know first
- Windows Server node images and containers are unavailable in Autopilot.
- The cluster management fee is 0.10 USD per month per cluster.
- Paid plans start at $9/mo.
Verdict
GKE combines managed cluster lifecycle controls with options for teams to manage nodes themselves. Its Autopilot mode excludes Windows Server node images and containers, so that limitation matters when selecting a cluster mode.
