Canon introduces EOS M100 Digital Camera: Specs and Price

Cannon has just upped its ante in the hot new mirrorless camera segment with the new EOS M100 camera. The camera will replace the M10 that has been in the market for 2 years though it is still weird the replacement device carries a model number that big.

Also, while the M100 has evolved from the M10, there still are quite a few noteworthy advancements introduced in the M100. Among the key features of the M100 include a 3-inch touchscreen interface lit up by 1.04 million pixel dots, interchangeable lens along with the ability to shoot full HD videos at 60 fps. The display again can be rotated 180 degrees, which comes in handy if you have been bitten by the selfie craze.

Surprisingly, the camera lacks the ability to shoot even 2K videos, let alone 4K. That again is quite unacceptable for a camera that is being launched in 2017, even though it is aimed at the entry level segment. Its max continuous shooting ability stands at 6.1 frames per second.

These apart, the M100 also boasts of a 24.2 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, which comes across as a heady improvement over the 18-megapixel sensor that the M10 comes with. Other salient features of the M100 are its Dual Pixel CMOS AF along with DIGIC 7 image processor.

There is also integrated Wi-Fi, NFC, and Bluetooth, with there being a dedicated physical wireless button as well at the rear. That together with a simplified user interface makes it convenient to transfer your snaps to a smartphone using the app the company provides for. Flash is built-in too, which explains the missing hot shoe for attaching an external flash.

On the whole, the M100 makes for a nice improvement over its predecessor, the M10. It is compact and light and is priced quite conveniently at $600, which makes it just right for an entry level device. However, the M100 still lacks quite a few features – such a 2K/4K video recording ability among one – that makes it stand a few notches lower than its similarly priced competitors.

This again can prove Cannon dangerous in the long run given that the mirrorless camera trend is already on and the company is yet to have a competent device in the segment.
