Overview

Touch Typer turns practice into a trackable routine through WPM and accuracy trends, per-key heatmaps, streaks, goals, and milestones that sync across devices. That makes it easier to identify weak keys and stick with practice, rather than relying on a single speed score. You can begin without an account, which lowers the barrier to trying core exercises and live play.

The service is built by individual developer Robert Koch. Its privacy policy describes collection of account, typing and keystroke, streak and goal, subscription, match, push-token, and diagnostic data. It describes HTTPS/TLS, database row-level security, and restricted production access, and names Supabase, Sentry, Fathom Analytics, Stripe, and Apple services as providers. Users can request a data export by email or delete their account; account and typing data are deleted within 30 days after deletion, subject to legal retention requirements. The security measures are useful, but the breadth of retained practice and match data may not suit privacy-sensitive users.

Key features

Layout-aware and code practice

Users can switch among QWERTY, Dvorak, and Colemak, and drills adjust to the selected layout. That flexibility makes Touch Typer a better fit for people learning an alternative layout than a tutor centered on one keyboard arrangement. Code Mode covers TypeScript, Python, Rust, Go, and more than 40 other languages, with syntax highlighting and indentation. Developers can practice the punctuation and structure of code, not just prose; readers seeking a general-purpose course rather than code-oriented drills may not value that distinction as much.

Feedback and competition

Analytics combine speed and accuracy history with per-key heatmaps, goals, streaks, and milestones. Live 60-second duels add WPM, accuracy, and error feedback, and friends can join from a shareable link without creating accounts. A leaderboard can be filtered by layout, language, and time window. These features suit learners motivated by visible milestones or friendly competition, though they are not a substitute for private practice if competitive play is distracting.

Premium coaching

The Premium AI Coach draws on the last 30 days of practice to build drills for weak keys and explain stalled progress. AI insights, custom drills, and weekly streak freezes add a more directed layer to the core practice loop. The coaching is most relevant once a learner has enough recent activity for patterns to emerge; casual typists can use the free core without paying for it.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes core typing tests, stats and streaks, multiple layouts, and real-time PvP. It is a substantial starting point for independent learners who want to practice and compare results without a subscription. Premium costs 2.99 USD per month, or $2.39/mo billed yearly, and adds everything in Free plus AI Coach, custom drills, AI insights, and weekly streak freezes. A 7-day trial is offered. The annual rate is the lower stated monthly price, while the monthly plan avoids an annual billing commitment; no seat or practice quota is part of the stated plan terms.

Platforms

Touch Typer is available for Linux, macOS, and Windows. Its desktop availability is a practical advantage for learners who want a tutor alongside their computer-based work, while it is not the choice for someone who specifically needs a web or mobile tutor.

Who it's for

Touch Typer fits individual learners who want to measure progress, practice on QWERTY or alternative layouts, and keep a routine through goals or duels. Developers get a particular reason to consider it in Code Mode. It is less suitable for users who need classroom administration, a web-only workflow, or minimal collection of typing data.

Pros and cons

Layout-aware drills: QWERTY, Dvorak, and Colemak support makes practice relevant to users who switch layouts.
Developer-focused practice: Code Mode supports many languages and preserves syntax highlighting and indentation.
Useful free tier: Tests, stats, streaks, multiple layouts, and live PvP are included without a paid plan.
Data trade-off: The service stores keystroke and performance data alongside account and activity information, which may be a concern for privacy-conscious users.
Desktop-only fit: Linux, macOS, and Windows coverage is broad for desktop users, but does not serve people seeking a web or mobile option.

Alternatives

Typing Tutor Software is the broader category directory for comparing tutors. Choose TIPP10 instead if you want a free tutor with Linux, macOS, Windows, and web support; donations are accepted. Typing.com is a web-based option with a free, grade-based mix of lessons, tests, and games, while its free edition includes ads, 70-day data retention, email-only support, and classroom-level settings. Choose TypingClub for a free individual edition or its school edition, priced at 120.00 USD per year. keybr is a free web and self-hosted alternative released under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0. Klavaro is free software with downloadable source code, a Windows installer, and Linux and MacPorts packages. Tux Typing is a free Linux, macOS, and Windows option developed by an international volunteer group for children. Typing Bolt offers free web practice with no credit card required. TypingCoach is a web-based alternative with a school plan priced at 59.00 GBP per year for schools of up to 100 pupils, with full access free through 31 July 2027.

Verdict

Choose Touch Typer if you want desktop typing practice that adapts to your layout, tracks improvement, and gives developers a way to work on code typing; the free tier is enough to establish a routine, and Premium adds targeted coaching for learners who need it. Look elsewhere if web or mobile access, classroom-focused features, or keeping keystroke data out of a service matters more than its analytics and drills.
