Overview

Docassemble turns an interview into more than a form: depending on the workflow, it can produce a document, submit an application, interact with an API, or simply deliver information. Its ability to ask questions according to what remains unknown can make complex intake more relevant to respondents, while giving builders room to shape the process.

That flexibility comes with real engineering and operational obligations. Authors use YAML, Markdown, and Python logic, and deployments require a server; the maker recommends Docker, while also describing Docker Compose, Helm, and installation without Docker. Teams seeking a managed service with little infrastructure responsibility should look elsewhere.

Key features

Interviews and document assembly

Templates can be composed in DOCX or PDF, with a Word add-in for DOCX workflows. Completed interviews can generate downloadable or emailed PDF, RTF, or DOCX documents. Conditional question logic helps avoid asking for information a particular case does not need, making the platform a fit for branching applications and document workflows rather than static form-to-file tasks alone.

Integrations and extensibility

Python lets developers extend interviews, and the API supports integrations with third-party applications. Files can be synchronized with a server through Google Drive, OneDrive, or a command-line utility. The feature set also includes touchscreen signatures, live chat, screen sharing, remote screen control, AI, SMS, email, fax, OCR, multilingual interviews, and multiuser applications. This breadth can support varied service workflows, though teams should plan to configure the capabilities they need rather than expect a turnkey product.

Deployment and security

A single machine is sufficient for most deployments, while a cluster can support high-performance use. The software itself has no usage fees, but an internet-hosted server typically costs $10–$40 per month or more depending on needs. Interview answers are encrypted in the SQL database unless the multi_user variable is True; uploaded and assembled documents are stored without encryption. HTTPS is recommended, and developer accounts can run arbitrary code on the server. These are consequential design choices for teams handling sensitive information: access controls and server administration need to be treated as part of the implementation.

Pricing

docassemble (self-hosted software): 0.00 USD per free. There are no software fees or usage fees. The practical cost is hosting, typically $10–$40 per month or more depending on performance, availability, and support needs. This plan is best for teams able to manage deployment and ongoing operations; the zero software price does not include a managed server.

Platforms

Docassemble supports API, Linux, self-hosted, and web use. Its deployment options give teams control over their environment, but they also make server setup and security their responsibility.

Who it's for

Legal teams and other organizations building interview-led applications can use Docassemble to tailor questions, assemble documents, and connect workflows to other applications. It is particularly suited to teams with Python development and server-administration capacity. It is a weaker fit for buyers who need a hosted, low-configuration document service or cannot take responsibility for the storage and security implications.

Pros and cons

Flexible interview outcomes: One workflow can produce documents, submit applications, call APIs, or provide information, supporting more than document generation alone.
Broad authoring and integration options: YAML, Markdown, Python, an API, and DOCX/PDF templates give technical teams room to shape workflows and outputs.
No software fees: Self-hosting avoids license and usage charges, though server costs remain.
Operational overhead: Teams must deploy and maintain the server, and the maker recommends Docker.
Document-storage exposure: Uploaded and assembled documents are stored without encryption, even though interview answers are encrypted in the SQL database under the stated default condition.
Privileged developer access: Developer accounts can run arbitrary code on the server, a material concern for organizations managing sensitive workflows.

A2J Author is free for qualifying legal aid organizations, government entities, courts, or other nonprofits for non-commercial use, with a registered and authenticated account required.

FreeWill is another free web option.

Verdict

Choose Docassemble if your team needs adaptable, interview-driven applications and document assembly, and has the skills to author and run them. Its strongest case is the combination of conditional workflows, extensibility, and no software fees. Look elsewhere if you need managed hosting or cannot accept the security responsibilities of storing documents and granting developer access on your server.
