Overview

VinylRest splits its work across Live, File, and ABC Player rather than combining playback cleanup, file repair, and comparison in one workflow. That makes it useful when you want to clean audio as it plays, create a restored copy of a recording, or compare source and cleaned audio. Processing runs locally on Mac, so recordings do not need to be uploaded to a remote service.

Key features

Live playback restoration

Live applies DeClick and DeCrackle to stereo audio in real time, with optional NRNG surface-noise reduction. Support for 16-bit or 24-bit audio from 32 to 192 kHz gives it room for varied playback setups, provided both input and output formats are compatible. It is a fit for listening cleanup without first making a digital file, but it depends on a compatible stereo signal path.

A browser WebApp lets a phone, tablet, or computer on the same network control and monitor a session without an account or cloud synchronization. The security trade-off is material: the WebApp uses plain HTTP with no password or encryption, so it should stay on a private, trusted LAN. Optional Shazam-powered recognition can show artwork and track details.

Live Pi

Live Pi is a beta image for Raspberry Pi, with Raspberry Pi 5 strongly recommended and a microSD card of at least 8 GB required. Its audio constraint is strict: it needs one Linux-compatible USB interface with stereo input and output on the same device. Separate USB input and output devices are unsupported, making this a poor fit for setups that rely on split interfaces.

File restoration and comparison

File restores a recording or folder while preserving the source and writing the restored audio and reports as new files. It accepts mono or stereo WAV, AIFF, FLAC, and ALAC up to 192 kHz, preserving source format and timeline. Folder restoration is useful for batch work, while the supported formats and channel counts define the boundary of the workflow.

ABC Player synchronizes two compatible files on an exact sample timeline and switches among Source, Cleaned, and live Difference monitoring. That makes it useful for focused A/B comparison, but both files must match in sample rate, channel count, and frame count; incompatible pairs are rejected rather than aligned approximately.

Pricing

All three tools are free. VinylRest Live is a free public beta, but processing requires a license; one Live Beta license supports up to three active Mac installations. Periodic online validation is normally due every seven days. VinylRest File is also a free public beta, and restoration requires a free license. VinylRest ABC Player is free on the Mac App Store. There are no paid plans in this lineup, but Live and File are not simply unrestricted installs: their license requirements matter for setup and ongoing use.

Platforms

VinylRest lists Linux, macOS, and web platforms across its product range. The Mac is the clearest fit for local File restoration and ABC Player comparison; Live also has a Raspberry Pi beta image with the hardware requirements described above. The browser WebApp is a control surface for Live sessions on the same network, not a cloud-synchronized workflow.

Who it's for

VinylRest suits vinyl listeners digitizing records who want playback cleanup and file restoration without sending recordings to a remote processor. It also serves users who need sample-synchronized comparison of source and cleaned files. It is less suitable when a workflow depends on a password-protected remote control surface, unsupported audio formats, or mismatched files for comparison.

Pros and cons

Pros

Three separate tools cover real-time cleanup, file restoration, and synchronized comparison, so users can choose the workflow they need.
Local Mac processing keeps recordings off remote processing services.
File preserves the source and writes a restored copy, while folder restoration supports batch work.
Each tool is free, with ABC Player distributed free on the Mac App Store.

Cons

Live's WebApp has no password or encryption, limiting safe use to a private, trusted LAN.
Live's processing requires a license and periodic online validation, despite the free beta.
Live Pi requires a single USB audio interface with stereo input and output; separate devices will not work.
ABC Player rejects file pairs unless sample rate, channel count, and frame count all match.

Alternatives

Audio Restoration Software is the broader category to browse if VinylRest’s format or workflow constraints do not fit.

Cathar is another free option for Linux and macOS users who want an alternative outside VinylRest’s separate Live, File, and ABC Player workflows.
CEDAR Cambridge is a paid macOS and Windows modular hardware and software system; choose it if a configurable system is a better fit, with custom pricing.
Neiro is a free alternative spanning Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows platforms.
SpectraLayers Pro is a paid macOS and Windows option with spectral audio editing, audio repair and restoration, and AI-assisted processing; it also offers a free trial.
Wave Arts Master Restoration Suite 6 costs 99.00 USD per once and provides five restoration plug-ins; choose it if a plug-in suite for a compatible host is preferable.
Diamond Cut Audio Restoration Tools 11.09 costs 59.00 USD per once, requires Windows 10 or later, and includes one year of free support.
@audio/denoise is a free web alternative.
Acoustica is a paid macOS and Windows option; its Standard plan covers two channels, while Premium supports 10 channels and up to 7.1.2.

Verdict

Choose VinylRest if you digitize records on Mac and want free, local tools for playback cleanup, file restoration, and precise source-versus-cleaned comparison. Its strongest case is that these distinct workflows are covered without a remote processing service. Look elsewhere if Live’s unprotected LAN control is unacceptable, your audio interface or files fall outside its compatibility limits, or you need a workflow beyond its focused toolset.
