Overview

Pro Tools is a digital audio workstation for recording, editing, and mixing, with workflows for both music production and audio post. It suits producers and post teams that need detailed track editing, plugin support, and sound-to-picture tools; its tier structure makes capacity, especially video tracks, the key buying decision.

Recording features include loop and punch-in recording, playlist comping, and up to 256 simultaneous audio inputs. Editing tools such as Elastic Audio, clip gain, pitch manipulation, and audio-to-MIDI conversion give users several ways to refine takes and reshape material. Automation, flexible routing, folder tracks, and spatial rendering for Dolby Atmos and Audio Vivid support complex mixes. These capabilities make Pro Tools a strong fit for work that moves from recording through mixing, rather than a lightweight editor for occasional trims.

Studio and Ultimate add video tracks and timecode for frame-accurate scoring, dialogue editing, and other sound-to-picture work. Cloud collaboration, third-party plugins, and ARA 2 integrations broaden its place in plugin-based studios. Active subscribers and users with active perpetual upgrade plans also receive Melodyne essential, RX 11 Spectral Editor, Acoustica Essentials, DynAssist Lite, RePitch Elements, SpectraLayers Go, and WaveLab Go.

Key features

Recording and editing: Loop recording, playlist comping, punch-in recording, and support for up to 256 simultaneous audio inputs suit sessions with substantial recording needs. Slip, Grid, Shuffle, and Spot modes provide different editing approaches, while Elastic Audio, clip gain, pitch manipulation, and audio-to-MIDI conversion extend post-recording control.
Mixing and production: MIDI sequencing, virtual instruments, samples, arrangement tools, automation, flexible routing, folder tracks, and mixing plugins cover both composition and mix work. Spatial rendering for Dolby Atmos and Audio Vivid is relevant to immersive mixes, though the higher track counts and video capacity depend on plan.
Plugin and picture workflows: Third-party plugin support and ARA 2 integrations from Acon Digital, Celemony, iZotope, Steinberg, Synchro Arts, Sound Radix, and Waves make it more adaptable to established plugin workflows. Video synchronization is useful for post; Studio and Ultimate add video tracks and timecode.

Pricing

Pro Tools has a free tier and paid plans, with a 30-day trial. The monthly prices below are billed monthly. Artist is the lower-cost paid option, while Studio and Ultimate scale track counts and video capacity for larger sessions and post work.

Plan	Price	Capacity and fit
Intro	Free forever	Up to 8 audio, 8 instrument, and 8 MIDI tracks; best for casual creators and small projects.
Artist	$9.99 USD per month	32 audio tracks and 64 MIDI tracks; the entry paid tier for music work that outgrows Intro. The Pro Tools Artist plan lists 110+ instruments and effects.
Studio	$34.99 USD per month	512 audio tracks, 1,024 MIDI tracks, and 1 video track; the practical step up for larger sessions and limited picture work. The Pro Tools Studio plan lists 130+ instruments and effects and immersive mixing.
Ultimate	$99.00 USD per month	2,048 audio tracks, 1,024 MIDI tracks, and 64 video tracks; the tier for extensive audio post and video editing. The Pro Tools Ultimate plan lists 130+ instruments and effects and full audio post workflows.

Artist, Studio, and Ultimate also have annual prices of $99, $299, and $599 respectively. Perpetual upgrade plans are priced at $69, $199, and $499 respectively; these renew existing perpetual licenses or update expired ones, rather than serving as ordinary subscriptions. Studio Education is $99 annually, $9.99 annual-paid-monthly, or $99 for a perpetual upgrade; Ultimate Education annual paid annually is $299. New annual-paid-monthly subscriptions have not been sold since January 1, 2023. Existing Studio annual-paid-monthly subscriptions renew at $34.99, and existing Ultimate annual-paid-monthly renewals are $99.99. Regular paid-upfront annual renewal prices are unaffected by the price changes that took effect May 2, 2024. Choose a plan based on the capacity you need: the lower tiers cap tracks sharply, while Ultimate's 64 video tracks target heavier picture work.

Platforms

Pro Tools runs on macOS and Windows. Minimum requirements include 16 GB RAM, 15 GB of free installation space, and an internet connection for installation and activation. Supported operating systems include macOS Tahoe 26.3.x, Sequoia 15.7.x, and Sonoma 14.8.x, plus Windows 11 versions 25H2 or 24H2. Teams should check that their machines meet these requirements before committing to a subscription.

Community support is available. Users with an active support contract, subscription, or Avid Support Code can create a support case or call Avid.

Who it's for

Pro Tools is best suited to studios, producers, artists, and audio post teams that need a single workstation for recording, editing, mixing, or scoring to picture. Intro gives casual creators a free way in, but its eight-track caps make it a poor fit for larger sessions. Artist makes sense for modest music projects; Studio is a better match when sessions need hundreds of audio tracks or a video track; Ultimate is aimed at extensive audio post sessions with many video tracks. It is less compelling for someone seeking a basic editor or a Linux workstation: it supports macOS and Windows, not Linux.

Pros and cons

Pro: The same workstation spans recording, MIDI production, mixing, and audio post, reducing the need to split those workflows across tools.
Pro: Up to 256 simultaneous audio inputs and extensive editing controls suit demanding recording and revision work.
Pro: Studio and Ultimate provide video tracks and timecode, with Ultimate expanding to 64 video tracks for substantial sound-to-picture projects.
Con: Intro's limits of 8 audio, 8 instrument, and 8 MIDI tracks are restrictive once projects grow.
Con: Studio costs $34.99 USD per month and Ultimate $99.00 USD per month when billed monthly, so the expanded capacity matters most to users who will use it.
Con: Installation and activation require internet access, and the minimum system requirements call for 16 GB RAM and 15 GB of free space.

Alternatives

For a different workflow, consider Ardour, a free-plan option available on Linux as well as macOS and Windows. Audacity is a free, open-source desktop audio editor for readers who want an editor without a subscription. Ocenaudio is another free downloadable desktop audio editor. WavePad offers a free plan and editions across desktop and mobile platforms.

Readers comparing broader categories can browse Digital Audio Workstations and Audio Editing Software. For game-focused work, see Game Audio Editors or Game Music Software. PhotoDirector, DSP-Quattro, AudioDirector, and MixPad are also alternatives.

Verdict

Choose Pro Tools if your team needs a deep recording and mixing workstation that can also handle audio post and picture workflows, and select the tier whose track and video limits match your sessions. The breadth from music production to post is its strongest reason to buy; look elsewhere if you need Linux support, a simple editor, or cannot justify the higher monthly tiers for their added capacity.
