Overview

Designed to reduce development time, C2000Ware brings device-specific drivers, libraries, peripheral examples, support files, bit-field headers and development guides into one C2000-focused package. TI recommends it over controlSUITE as its C2000 content delivery tool. That makes it the sensible baseline for projects on supported C2000 devices, but not a general-purpose toolkit for teams working across unrelated microcontroller families.

The package extends beyond firmware sources. Schematics, bills of materials, Gerber files and documentation for C2000 controlCARDs, Experimenter Kits and LaunchPads can help teams working with the supported boards understand their hardware alongside their code.

Key features

Device-level starting points: Drivers, peripheral examples, support files and bit-field headers give C2000 developers material to build on rather than a blank project. Their device-specific focus is useful for C2000 work, but does not make the package broadly portable.
Control, math and signal libraries: IQMath, floating-point and CLA math, DSP, digital control, signal generation, CRC, Viterbi and complex math libraries cover needs that often arise in control and signal-processing firmware. AES encryption and decryption add cryptographic routines to the same package.
RTOS support: FreeRTOS is included with C28x and Cortex-M4 ports and demo examples. This gives teams exploring RTOS-based designs a concrete starting point, while the package’s central focus remains C2000 development.
Development and debug tooling: C2000Ware includes flash programmers and other development utilities, as well as integrated debugging and flashing support. It supports vendor hardware probes, JTAG and Spy-Bi-Wire debug interfaces, and Code Composer Studio projects and SysConfig build workflows.
Board design resources: Design files and documentation for controlCARDs, Experimenter Kits and LaunchPads make the package relevant to hardware work as well as firmware. That breadth is most valuable when a project uses those TI boards.
Cloud support: TI Cloud support provides a cloud-access option alongside desktop installers, though teams choosing the desktop route must account for export approval.

Pricing

C2000Ware — 0.00 USD per free (billed Free download). The free plan covers C2000 microcontrollers, with no trial period to manage. It includes the package’s drivers, libraries, examples, utilities and hardware resources, making it a strong fit for individual developers and teams adopting C2000 without a software purchase.

The trade-off is not a paid-plan feature gap but the package’s scope and access conditions: C2000Ware is tailored to its supported targets, and the Windows, Linux and macOS installer downloads require export approval. The license model is commercial, so teams should assess that model against their own project and use requirements rather than assuming that a free download means an open-source license.

Platforms

The latest listed desktop release, version 26.01.00.00.STS, is available for Windows, Linux and macOS, with a release date of May 20, 2026. Each desktop installer is marked as requiring export approval, a meaningful procurement and setup consideration for teams that need predictable access. TI Cloud support is also included. C2000Ware’s target architecture is C28x, and its listed build systems are Code Composer Studio projects and SysConfig.

Who it's for

C2000Ware is aimed at developers working with TI’s C2000 microcontrollers in automotive, real-time digital power, motor control and automation applications. Firmware teams can draw on its device support, libraries and RTOS examples; hardware-oriented engineers can use its board design documentation. It is less suitable when a team needs one development package for a varied fleet of unrelated microcontrollers, or when export approval makes the desktop installers inaccessible.

Pros and cons

Pro: A free download combines drivers, examples, libraries, utilities and board files, reducing the need to assemble those C2000-specific resources separately.
Pro: FreeRTOS ports, demos, integrated flashing and debugging, and established debug interfaces support a range of firmware development tasks in the same package.
Pro: TI’s recommendation over controlSUITE gives C2000 teams a clear current content-delivery choice within TI’s tooling.
Con: Desktop installers require export approval, which can complicate access before development begins.
Con: The C28x focus and C2000-specific content limit its value as a shared tool across teams using different MCU families.
Con: A commercial license model means teams should check that the licensing terms fit their intended use, despite the free download price.

Alternatives

Choose Arm Keil MDK instead if your work centers on Cortex-M devices and you want its Keil Studio and Keil μVision options; its Community plan is for non-commercial use. CS+ is another free option, with CS+ for CC free for development and production, though compiler evaluation limits apply when using an evaluation compiler.

IAR Embedded Workbench is worth considering when a paid tool with a time-limited evaluation suits the project: its evaluation lasts 14 days, is non-commercial, and excludes runtime library source, C-STAT and MISRA C support. For a free community-oriented IDE with forums and documentation access, consider PlatformIO IDE. Teams prioritizing open-source software can consider Arduino IDE, whose version 2.0 is open source.

AURIX Development Studio is a free, Windows-only alternative with no time or code-size limitations. e² studio is free with no paid version, but separate compiler packages are not included and may have their own licensing terms or evaluation limits. For ESP-IDF development in VS Code, consider ESP-IDF Extension for VS Code.

Verdict

For teams building real-time control firmware on TI C2000 devices, C2000Ware is the strongest fit: its free package brings device support, libraries, development utilities and board documentation together. Choose it when that focused ecosystem matches your hardware and export approval is manageable; look elsewhere for a multi-vendor toolchain or when installer access and the commercial license model do not fit your requirements.
