Overview

Founded in 2012, Action Network serves individuals and groups organizing around progressive causes. Organizers can publish petitions, surveys, letter campaigns, event RSVPs, ticketed event pages, and fundraising forms, then reach supporters through email or mobile messaging.

The platform draws a clear boundary around its role: it does not provide websites, offline organizing, general CRM work, or FEC compliance. Activist records must include an email address or phone number, which makes it a poor fit for organizations whose contact records lack both. Action Network is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit and the sole shareholder of Action Squared Inc., which makes its toolsets.

Key features

Campaigns and communications

Email tools include custom templates, targeting, personalization, A/B testing, automated workflows, drip campaigns, and analytics. Teams can download their list data, a useful option when they need to sync supporter information with other systems. Mobile messaging supports SMS and MMS, but it is an add-on available only with an email partnership, not a standalone route into the platform.

Events and fundraising

Event features cover RSVP management, reminders, self check-in, ticketing, and maps. Fundraising pages support recurring gifts and donor management, connecting event and campaign activity to fundraising workflows without making Action Network a general-purpose CRM.

Integrations, API, and security

Integrations include a full Salesforce sync, built-in Catalist and SpeechifAI connections, and links to ActBlue, CallHub, Zapier, Make, and n8n. The REST API can retrieve and post data and sync systems, but API access is limited to paying partners. That restriction matters for teams evaluating how much they can connect or automate before committing to a paid partnership.

Action Network says it encrypts traffic and stored data, uses HTTPS/SSL on pages and widgets, and is PCI compliant; Stripe handles card information. Support includes unlimited email support, a getting-started training series, help articles, and a weekly demo every Tuesday at 1pm Eastern.

Pricing

Action Network uses a freemium model, with paid plans starting at $15/mo. The free plan, Free, is described as providing tools for grassroots activists; no price applies. It gives smaller or volunteer-led efforts a way to begin, but teams needing partner API access or paid-plan capabilities should account for the move to a paid tier.

Movement costs 15.00 USD per month, billed starting at $15/mo. Its usage-based email rate is $1.25 per 1,000 emails, with a $15 monthly minimum covering the first 12,000 emails. It is positioned for a single, small to midsize organization. Mobile messaging is a separate add-on.

Network costs 125.00 USD per month, billed starting at $125/mo. Email is usage-based at $2.50 per 1,000, with a $125 monthly minimum covering the first 50,000 emails. It is aimed at federated or multi-group organizations, and mobile messaging remains a separate add-on. The higher minimum and included volume make it the tier to consider when multiple groups need a shared organizing setup.

Boost is an add-on for advanced tools and features, priced as a flat monthly charge that varies by email volume: $450 below 2 million emails, $750 for 2–8 million, and $1,050 above 8 million. Enterprise has custom pricing and is for organizations with 1M+ monthly emails. Organizations should compare these volume-based terms with their sending needs rather than treating the starting monthly amount as the whole cost.

Platforms

Action Network is available on web and provides an API. That API is useful for connecting systems, but access is restricted to paying partners. Mobile messaging refers to SMS and MMS campaigns, not a listed mobile app platform, and it requires the email-partnership add-on.

Who it's for

Action Network is best suited to progressive advocacy organizations that need petitions, legislator outreach, action campaigns, supporter email, events, and fundraising together. Its audience ranges from grassroots groups to established federated organizations. Teams that need a general CRM, website publishing, offline organizing, FEC compliance, or contact records without an email address or phone number should choose a more suitable system or pair other tools with it.

Pros and cons

Pros: Campaigns, email, events, and fundraising share one organizing toolset, reducing the need to split those workflows across separate products.
Pros: Email automation, targeting, testing, and analytics support more involved supporter communication than simple broadcast email.
Pros: Salesforce sync, other named integrations, and data downloads give teams routes to coordinate supporter data with connected systems.
Cons: SMS and MMS are a separate add-on tied to an email partnership, so mobile outreach adds a dependency and cost beyond the core plan.
Cons: API access is only for paying partners, limiting API-led evaluation or integration for organizations on the free plan.
Cons: No website, offline organizing, general CRM, or FEC compliance support means it cannot cover every operational need of a campaign organization.
Cons: Requiring an email address or phone number for every activist record excludes workflows built around less complete contact data.

Alternatives

For another freemium advocacy platform, New/Mode has a free Individual plan with unlimited contacts, smart petitions, unlimited email blasts, email-your-rep campaigns, social media advocacy tools, and self-service help. Consider it if those stated free-plan tools better match your requirements.

ActionKit is a paid web and API alternative. ControlShift is also paid, with custom pricing terms provided in an order form for customer approval. Changemaker Lite offers a free self-hosted plan with 45+ campaign tools, unlimited users and data, community support, and deployment on your infrastructure; choose it when self-hosting is the priority.

Rally Starter, CORE Software, and DearMEP are other web-based options with free plans. Quorum Grassroots is a paid web option with pricing tailored to organization size and needs, determined by users, advocate database size, and feature requirements.

Verdict

Choose Action Network if a progressive organization needs advocacy campaigns, email, events, and fundraising in a shared platform, with integrations for the systems around it. Its strongest case is the breadth of organizing workflows; its clearest reason to look elsewhere is the boundary around websites, offline work, general CRM, FEC compliance, and partner-only API access.
