Overview

Canonical MAAS is an open-source platform for managing physical servers as cloud resources. It is best suited to infrastructure teams building private clouds, bare-metal Kubernetes deployments, or automated server fleets. Its broad provisioning and lifecycle coverage makes it a strong fit for those jobs, but support for MAAS controllers requires Ubuntu Pro.

Key features

MAAS automates the physical-server lifecycle from discovery and inventory through commissioning, deployment, and decommissioning. PXE boot and support for IPMI-enabled machines, along with discovery across subnets, VLANs, and switch fabrics, help teams bring varied hardware into one provisioning workflow. Nodes can be managed through the web UI, CLI, or API, so operators can combine interactive administration with automation.

The cloud-like API integrates with Terraform, Juju, and Ansible. That makes MAAS more compelling for teams already using infrastructure-as-code and orchestration than for organizations seeking only a simple imaging tool. It supports Ubuntu, CentOS, Windows, and RHEL images, which can be synchronized or served from an onsite mirror for offline environments.

Network configuration includes IP assignment, bonding, VLANs, virtual bridges, static routes, DHCP, and DNS. Storage layouts include Bcache, RAID, and LVM. LXD and KVM capabilities let teams create and manage virtual machines through the UI, CLI, and API, extending MAAS beyond provisioning physical hosts. Built-in or uploaded hardware tests, with historical data and metrics, add a way to track hardware checks over time.

Canonical positions Ubuntu Pro as the source of security patching and enterprise support for controllers and Ubuntu machines. Since controllers require Ubuntu Pro, even users choosing free self-support need to account for that requirement; teams with other machines can use Standalone Support for machines not running Ubuntu Pro, provided the controller hosts run Ubuntu Pro.

Pricing

MAAS uses a freemium model. Self-support costs 0.00 USD per free and covers all machines, but excludes HA support, RBAC, the Knowledge Base, a Sev 1 response SLA, and phone or ticket support. It suits homelabs, proofs of concept, and small deployments that can operate without those support and access-control features.

Paid plans are billed per managed machine, so the annual rate scales with fleet size:

Essential: 30.00 USD per year. Adds HA support, RBAC, and the Knowledge Base; it has no Sev 1 response SLA and no phone or ticket support. A fit for teams that need those operational features but can handle incidents without a guaranteed response.
Standard: 50.00 USD per year. Includes HA support, RBAC, the Knowledge Base, and a 4-hour Sev 1 response time, with phone and ticket support during office hours. It suits production teams that want defined incident response within the working day.
Advanced: 100.00 USD per year. Includes the same core features, a 1-hour Sev 1 response time, and phone and ticket support 24 hours a day, every day. It is the clearest choice for operations that cannot limit support to office hours.

Essential is the lowest paid step for HA and RBAC, but it does not buy a Sev 1 response commitment or direct support channels. The per-machine billing makes the choice consequential for large fleets; select the higher tiers when response time and round-the-clock access matter.

Platforms

MAAS is available through an API, on Linux, as self-hosted software, and on the web. Network deployment, unattended deployment, driver injection, and multi-tenant management support integration into managed bare-metal environments rather than a single-host provisioning workflow.

Who it's for

MAAS is a strong candidate for teams operating bare-metal private clouds with OpenStack, deploying Kubernetes onto physical servers, or automating server provisioning at scale. Its multiple management interfaces and integrations reward teams with established automation practices. The documented single-machine region-and-rack installation also accommodates homelabs, proofs of concept, and small production environments; multiple controllers are an option for high availability, which requires a paid plan for HA support.

It is less suitable for teams that need controller support without Ubuntu Pro, or that want high availability, role-based access control, or responsive support while remaining on the free tier.

Pros and cons

Pro: Automates discovery through decommissioning, reducing the need to stitch together separate steps for the physical-server lifecycle.
Pro: API integrations with Terraform, Juju, and Ansible fit teams that already manage infrastructure through code.
Pro: Broad network, storage, operating-system image, and VM capabilities cover varied bare-metal environments, including offline image serving.
Con: Ubuntu Pro is required on controller hosts, adding a prerequisite even for self-support deployments.
Con: The free tier omits HA support, RBAC, a Knowledge Base, and direct support; production teams may need to budget for paid per-machine plans.
Con: Essential still has no Sev 1 response SLA or phone and ticket support, so teams needing incident coverage must move to Standard or Advanced.

Alternatives

Foreman is worth considering when a free, open-source, self-managed option is the priority and MAAS's paid support tiers are not needed.

openQRM Enterprise offers a free community edition with an open-source version, community support, and plugin library, with an Enterprise option for teams seeking enterprise add-ons and expert support.

AuroraBoot is another free, self-hosted option for teams comfortable running it with Docker or a container engine.

Confluent is a free alternative with API, Linux, self-hosted, and web platforms.

NVIDIA Infra Controller is a free option with API and self-hosted platforms.

Grendel is a free alternative with API, Linux, self-hosted, and web platforms.

MetalSoft Bare Metal Orchestrator is a paid alternative with custom pricing.

Verdict

Choose Canonical MAAS if your team needs an API-driven system to provision and manage bare-metal fleets across their lifecycle, especially for private cloud, Kubernetes, or server automation. Its breadth and automation integrations are the main reasons to choose it. Look elsewhere if you cannot meet the Ubuntu Pro controller requirement or need HA and dependable incident support without per-machine paid plans.
