Overview

The project says this version was updated to match IEEE 9274.1.1, also known as xAPI 2.0. It describes the release as stable while limiting its intended use to a small number of users for proof-of-concept work. That caveat should guide adoption: stability is useful, but it is not a claim of capacity for larger deployments.

Apache License 2.0 gives teams an open-source basis to adapt the software. The repository accepts pull requests and directs contributors who prefer not to edit code to file an issue, a reasonable path for teams prepared to engage with a project rather than rely on a managed-service relationship.

Key features

Self-hosted deployment

Docker and Docker Compose are the project’s recommended simplest installation route. The deployment combines a Django web service with uWSGI, an nginx HTTP/HTTPS proxy, PostgreSQL, RabbitMQ and Redis. Having those components assembled is useful, but teams still need to run and maintain a multi-service stack. Database configuration can be changed through the database settings in settings.ini.

The Docker guide describes an included Certbot container for obtaining a certificate for a publicly available domain and restarting nginx to use it. That supports a conventional public-domain SSL setup, though it remains part of the operator’s deployment work.

xAPI processing and integrations

ADL Open Source LRS stores learning data collected through xAPI. Celery handles activity-metadata retrieval, statement voiding and LRS-hook checks asynchronously, keeping those tasks out of the immediate request path.

OAuth is off by default. Teams can enable it with the OAUTH_ENABLED setting and register clients with the LRS, which gives implementers a choice but requires an explicit configuration step. Statement webhooks are also optional and disabled by default: they can filter incoming xAPI statements and send matches to a client endpoint. A webhook can include a secret so the LRS sends an HMAC hex digest in the X-LRS-Signature header, a useful verification mechanism for consumers that configure it.

Pricing

The ADL Open Source LRS plan costs 0.00 USD per free. The free offering is the open-source proof-of-concept software, not a hosted service; Docker deployment and its included services are part of the operator-run setup. The plan is explicitly intended for a small amount of users, so teams should not treat the zero price as evidence of production-scale capacity. There is no free trial because the software is free.

Platforms

The project is available as an API, a self-hosted deployment and a web service. That combination suits teams integrating xAPI data into an existing stack while retaining control over hosting. It is less suitable for teams that need a vendor-operated platform.

Who it's for

This is a sensible choice for developers evaluating xAPI 2.0 workflows, small learning-technology teams building a proof of concept, and organizations that can operate Docker-based services and configure integrations themselves. The small-user scope and multi-service footprint make it a weaker choice for high-volume use or teams seeking a hands-off LRS.

Pros and cons

Pro: Apache 2.0 licensing and self-hosting give teams an adaptable xAPI store without a software charge.
Pro: Optional OAuth, statement filtering webhooks and HMAC signatures provide integration and verification controls when enabled.
Pro: Docker Compose brings the web service, proxy, database, queue and cache into one deployment approach.
Con: The project limits the intended audience to a small number of users, so it is not a sound default for a service expected to scale.
Con: Operators must manage several services, while OAuth and webhooks require additional configuration and start disabled.

Alternatives

Veracity Learning is worth considering when a freemium LRS with a free Lite plan for five LRSs and multiple desktop and server platforms is a better fit.
Cluelabs LRS offers a free plan and Android and iOS alongside API and web access for teams prioritizing those client platforms.
Ralph is another free, self-hosted open-source LRS, distributed as a Python package and Docker image under MIT licensing.
Sereni LRS may suit teams seeking a free hosted-style allowance with up to 100,000 xAPI statements or events, 1 GB storage and unlimited LRSs and reporting.
SQL LRS is another Apache 2.0, free, self-hosted option, with implementation and support services quoted separately.
TRAX LRS has a free GPL3 Starter Edition capped at one admin user and one xAPI endpoint, with MySQL or PostgreSQL and statement exploration.
Bealink LXP is a paid API and web platform with pricing by request.
EscolaLMS LRS is another free option with API and self-hosted platforms.

Verdict

Choose ADL Open Source LRS when you need an open-source, self-hosted xAPI store for a small proof of concept and have the skills to operate its supporting services. Its standards alignment and configurable integration hooks are persuasive for that job. Look elsewhere if user growth, larger-scale deployment or vendor-managed operation is central to the decision.
