Overview

LibertyBans is a free Minecraft server plugin for administering player and IP punishments, with an API for other plugins. It is best suited to moderation teams that need configurable staff authority or networks coordinating punishments across multiple instances. Its breadth across server software and database choices is a strong fit for varied deployments, provided Java 17 and platform-specific dependencies suit the stack.

Key features

Moderators can issue bans, mutes, warnings, kicks and temporary punishments, and remove punishments for players or IP addresses. Templates let administrators set punishment type, reason and duration; exemptions can limit which staff members may punish others, such as preventing trainees from banning administrators. These controls support consistent policy and staff hierarchy, but they are most useful when an owner is prepared to configure rules around the team.

LibertyBans can automatically enforce IP bans against suspected alternate accounts, display suspected alts by command and notify staff when they join. That gives moderators several ways to respond to suspected evasion, while automatic enforcement may not suit servers that prefer to review each case first.

For a standalone server, LibertyBans can use local HyperSQL. Networks can instead use remote MariaDB, MySQL or PostgreSQL, and configure synchronization across multiple proxies or instances, either through a proxy installation or multiple backend servers. This flexibility accommodates different network layouts; operators still need to choose and configure the database and synchronization arrangement that fits their deployment.

The developer API provides a framework for other plugins to work with LibertyBans. Configuration includes connection-pool and statement-cache settings. The project also says dependencies use secure SHA-512 hashes and builds are reproducible so checksums can be verified—useful assurances for teams evaluating software supply-chain practices.

Pricing

LibertyBans is free software. Its Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes the supported Minecraft server platforms; there is no paid tier described. The price removes a software-cost barrier for both single-server operators and network teams, though the Java and platform requirements still shape deployment effort.

Platforms

LibertyBans supports Bukkit, Spigot, Paper, Purpur, Folia, BungeeCord, Waterfall, Fabric, Sponge and Velocity. It is self-hosted and also provides an API. Java 17 is required; Fabric installations require adventure-platform-mod. For mutes on a Velocity proxy, SignedVelocity must be installed on both the proxy and backend servers. Those dependencies matter when comparing it with a tool that fits an existing server stack without additional components.

Who it's for

Choose LibertyBans if your Minecraft server needs more than basic punishment commands: its templates, staff exemptions, suspected-alt handling and database options serve teams with defined moderation policies, while synchronization supports multi-instance operations. A small server can use the local database path, but teams that want minimal setup or cannot meet Java 17 and platform-specific requirements should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros

Broad server coverage: support spans standalone server software, proxies and mod platforms, giving operators more deployment options.
Policy and staff controls: templates and exemptions let owners align punishments with reasons, durations and staff roles.
Network-ready storage and synchronization: local HyperSQL and three remote database choices support both single-server and multi-instance configurations.
Free software with an API: there is no plan charge, and other plugins can integrate through the developer framework.

Cons

Runtime and dependency requirements: Java 17, adventure-platform-mod for Fabric, and SignedVelocity for Velocity mutes add deployment constraints.
Configuration is part of the job: owners must set templates, exemptions and, for networks, database and synchronization behavior to match their operation.
Automatic suspected-alt IP bans may be too aggressive: servers that require moderator review before enforcement may not want this behavior.

Alternatives

For another free moderation plugin with a developer-facing angle, consider BanManager: its maker describes it as open source and welcomes contributions, and it spans API, Linux, self-hosted and web platforms. Choose it if those traits are a better match for your deployment or contribution priorities.

ModGUI is a free, self-hosted option for Paper 1.21.11 or newer under the MIT license. Staff+ is another free self-hosted option, with MIT licensing and support for Paper, Purpur, Folia and Velocity within its stated version ranges. Consider either when its stated platform and version coverage fits your server.

Nimbus AntiCheat is a free self-hosted option with requirements including Paper 1.21.8, Java 21 and PacketEvents, and it targets Java-edition players. PunishBAN, AdvancedSensitiveWords, ChatSentinel and ReducedX-Anti Cheat are also alternatives; choose among them according to your needs.

Verdict

LibertyBans is a strong choice for Minecraft operators who need configurable punishments, staff exemptions and synchronization across a network, especially when an API and broad platform support matter. Its free plan is compelling, but Java 17 and dependencies such as SignedVelocity or adventure-platform-mod can make it the wrong fit for stacks that cannot accommodate them.
