Overview

Ahrefs is an SEO research and site-analysis platform for teams that need keyword, competitor, backlink, and technical-site data in one place. It suits SEO practitioners and marketers who can work within per-plan project, keyword, and crawl limits. Its breadth and API access make it a strong fit for research-heavy workflows, but seat costs and quotas deserve close attention as a team scales.

Key features

Research, tracking, and audits

Keyword and competitor research, rank tracking, backlink analysis, and Site Audit cover the main loops of search work: finding opportunities, monitoring positions, examining links, and identifying site issues. Content Explorer adds web-mention and link-prospect discovery. The combination is useful for teams that want these tasks in one platform; its practical capacity depends on the subscription rather than the headline breadth.

Ahrefs says its index contains 170 trillion pages, tracks 41.9 billion keywords, filters 28.7 billion keywords, and that AhrefsBot crawls 8 billion pages daily. Those figures signal substantial underlying coverage, while actual project, keyword, and crawl allowances remain the more immediate constraint for an individual account.

Content, AI, and integrations

AI Content Helper is aimed at improving content, and Ask Ahrefs is free during beta on Lite and higher plans. The platform also offers APIs, MCP access, native Ahrefs integration, Looker Studio integration, and connections to AI chatbots. This gives technically oriented teams several ways to bring Ahrefs into existing workflows; the feature set is less compelling if the need is only a standalone writing assistant.

Pricing

Ahrefs has a free tier and paid subscriptions, with annual payment saving up to 17%. The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and provides site data and fixes with limited Site Explorer and Site Audit access. It is a practical starting point for owners focused on their own site, not a substitute for broader paid research.

Starter costs 29.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and covers keyword and competitor research. It is the low-cost entry for users who mainly need to investigate searches and competitors; it gives up the stated project, tracked-keyword, and crawl-credit allowances of higher plans.

Lite costs 129.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and includes one user, five projects, 750 tracked keywords, and 100,000 crawl credits per month. It fits a solo practitioner with a modest portfolio, but additional users cost $40/mo each, up to two more. Standard costs 249.00 USD per month, billed monthly, with one included user, 20 projects, 2,000 tracked keywords, and 500,000 crawl credits per month; up to five additional users cost $60/mo each. It is better suited to a larger workload, though seat additions make team pricing rise quickly.

Advanced costs 449.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and includes one user, 50 projects, 5,000 tracked keywords, and 1,500,000 crawl credits per month. It suits heavier research and audit volume, with up to ten extra users at $80/mo each. Enterprise costs 1499.00 USD per month with an annual commitment required; it starts with three users, 10,000 tracked keywords, 5,000,000 crawl credits per month, and unlimited historical data. Its higher commitment and custom-scale capacity make it the option for larger operations rather than teams seeking month-to-month flexibility. Enterprise also includes SSO, two-factor authentication, ISO27001 certification, access management, audit logs, and unlimited additional users.

Separate prompt packages cost 50.00 USD per month for 2,500 checks with $0.020/check overage, 100.00 USD per month for 7,000 checks with $0.015/check overage, and 250.00 USD per month for 25,000 checks with $0.010/check overage. Brand Radar starts at 199.00 USD per month for AI research and prompt tracking. These are additional options for teams with those specific tracking needs, not replacements for the core subscription. Multilingual support is available five days a week, with a median first response time of 5:58 minutes. No trial or refund policy is stated; choose a plan based on its recurring limits rather than expecting a trial period.

Platforms

Ahrefs provides web marketing tools, APIs, AI assistants, and MCP access. That range suits teams integrating SEO data into web-based work or programmatic workflows. Support is multilingual and available five days a week.

Who it's for

Ahrefs is best for SEO specialists, content teams, and agencies that need research, rank monitoring, audits, and link analysis together, and can match project and crawl volumes to a plan. Developers and data-oriented teams also have a reason to consider it because API and MCP access support integration into a broader stack. It is a weaker fit for teams needing many seats on a low budget or a narrow, single-purpose tool.

Pros and cons

Broad SEO coverage: keyword and competitor research, tracking, audits, and backlink analysis sit alongside content discovery, reducing the need to split these jobs across separate tools.
Large stated data infrastructure: the index and crawler scale support extensive research, though plan quotas still determine each account's working capacity.
Integration options: APIs, MCP, Looker Studio, and chatbot connections accommodate technical and reporting workflows.
Free entry point: site data and fixes are available without a paid subscription, but Site Explorer and Site Audit access is limited.
Team costs can climb: paid plans include only one seat on Lite through Advanced, with additional users charged separately.
Capacity is tiered: projects, tracked keywords, and crawl credits are capped below Enterprise, so larger workloads may force an upgrade.

Alternatives

For a different SEO platform, compare SEO Analytics Software, Backlink Analysis Tools, Competitor SEO Tools, and AI SEO Software. For hashtag-specific discovery, see Hashtag Generator Tools; for detecting AI-written content, see AI Content Detection Software.

Keyword Tool is a relevant alternative when keyword discovery is the narrower need: its Starter plan costs 68.00 USD per month and offers 50 requests/day, 50,000 keywords/day, 12 months of history, and 16 platforms. SISTRIX is another SEO option, with a paid Start plan at 119.00 EUR per month, one user, three projects, 30,000 URLs crawled per month, and three months of data history. Choose based on the fit of those allowances and your preferred research scope.

Buffer, HashtagsForLikes, Copy.ai, CaptureFlow Hashtag Generator, Inflact Hashtag Generator, and ReelDrop Hashtag Generator are alternatives for readers comparing adjacent social, content, or hashtag tools.

Verdict

Choose Ahrefs if your team needs a substantial SEO research and audit toolkit with API and content capabilities, and its plan quotas match your workload. Look elsewhere if seat costs, constrained project and crawl allowances, or a narrower single-task requirement outweigh the benefit of keeping these tools together.
