Overview

Aimeos is a framework, not a finished hosted store: teams use it to build their own commerce experiences. Its core packages are open source and free for commercial use, with no recurring license fees for self-run stores or client projects. That keeps licensing out of the operating budget, while leaving the work of building and running the platform with the team or its agency.

Key features

The feature set reaches well beyond a basic catalog: it covers product variants, bundles, vouchers, downloads, events, subscriptions, recurring payments, and configurable goods. Multi-vendor, multi-channel, multi-warehouse, and multi-tenant support make it a credible foundation for businesses consolidating several commerce operations in one installation. Smaller shops may find that breadth unnecessary.

A JSON:API REST API and a GraphQL admin API support custom frontends, progressive web apps, and mobile apps. Omnipay connects Aimeos to more than 100 payment providers, including PayPal, Authorize.net, Mollie, and Stripe. Payments are described as PCI compliant through gateways; security measures include reviewed code, SQL injection allowlists, and Content Security Policy support against cross-site scripting.

Database support includes MySQL, PostgreSQL, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, and DB2. The framework supports up to 100,000 products out of the box with standard MySQL; SOLR or Elasticsearch can support more than one billion, with the maker tying that scale to its gigacommerce extension. The larger figure depends on the search technology and extension, so it should not be treated as a turnkey capacity guarantee.

Pricing

The core framework is open source and free for commercial use, with no license or transaction fees. Aimeos Core is also priced at 0.00 USD per free under the LGPLv3 license. These are the natural starting points for teams able to manage their own deployment and development.

Paid support is separate from the core. Extended long term support costs 99.00 USD per month plus VAT, paid yearly with a 12-month minimum; it provides bug fixes and security updates for Aimeos LTS versions across Laravel, TYPO3, and Symfony. Basic support is 179.00 USD per month plus VAT, also with a 12-month minimum, for email and direct developer support with a 24-business-hour response. Extended support costs 379.00 USD per month plus VAT, with the same minimum and a 12-business-hour response, adding telephone or video callback support. Premium support is 569.00 USD per month plus VAT, with a 12-month minimum and an 8-business-hour response, including remote web or SSH, callback, email, and direct developer support. Support subscriptions provide unlimited requests per developer per month, but exclude implementation and custom development.

For discrete assistance, the Professional support package costs 259.00 USD per once plus VAT for two hours, with personal email and direct developer support, web or SSH assistance, and a 24-business-hour response. The support tiers are best judged by the response time and access a team needs; none replaces a development budget.

Platforms

Aimeos supports API-based and web commerce on Linux and in self-hosted deployments. Both deployment options are supported, making it relevant to teams that need to retain hosting control rather than move their store to a vendor-hosted service.

Who it's for

Developers, agencies, and enterprises building custom shops, marketplaces, or B2B platforms are the clearest fit. Teams benefit most when they need the multi-store capabilities, API access, or catalog headroom and can supply implementation and operations expertise. A small merchant seeking a ready-to-launch storefront should look for a more packaged product.

Pros and cons

Pros: Commercial-use core packages carry no recurring license fees, which helps teams avoid per-seat or transaction licensing charges.
Pros: Multi-tenant, multi-vendor, multi-channel, and multi-warehouse support can bring complex operations together in one installation.
Pros: REST and GraphQL APIs, broad payment-provider connections, and multiple database options give builders flexibility in fitting Aimeos into an existing stack.
Cons: Aimeos is a framework for self-run commerce, not a hosted turnkey storefront; teams must account for implementation and ongoing platform work.
Cons: Paid support subscriptions require a 12-month minimum and do not cover implementation or custom development, so support is not a substitute for delivery capacity.
Cons: The billion-item scale depends on SOLR or Elasticsearch and the gigacommerce extension; standard MySQL is listed for up to 100,000 products out of the box.

Alternatives

Bagisto is a relevant alternative for teams seeking a free, self-hosted open-source commerce platform that also supports Linux, APIs, and web. Its stated self-hosted requirements include PHP 8.3+, MySQL 8.0.32+ or MariaDB 10.3+, and 4 GB RAM or higher.

Commerce Layer is worth considering for teams that prefer a freemium option with a Developer plan capped at one organization, two users, two markets, 1,000 SKUs, 10 links, and 100 free live orders per month; its Enterprise plan has custom pricing.

Crystallize may fit a team looking for a freemium platform whose Particle plan allows one tenant per project, unlimited users and languages, 25 orders, 100 items, and 5 GB bandwidth.

Sylius is another freemium option: its Standard edition is open source under the MIT license, community-supported, and distributed on-premise, while Sylius Plus costs 800.00 EUR per year.

Unchained Engine is a free, open-source alternative without licensing or per-transaction fees, though the user pays for hosting infrastructure.

Medusa offers a freemium model and a Develop plan at 29.00 USD per month, with stated monthly allowances for edge requests and email, plus a shared server and development environments.

Foxy is a paid option with a free trial and a Starter plan at 30.00 USD per month billed annually, including 100 transactions per month with additional transaction charges.

Fabric Commerce Platform is a paid API and web commerce alternative.

Verdict

Choose Aimeos if your developers or agency need a self-hosted PHP foundation for custom shops, marketplaces, or B2B operations, especially where multi-store capabilities and a commercial-use core without recurring license fees matter. Look elsewhere if you need a ready-made hosted storefront or expect a support subscription to cover implementation.
