Overview

Vespa covers vector and tensor search, positional text search, and structured-data retrieval. Hybrid search, sparse vectors, metadata filtering, and HNSW indexes give teams several ways to shape retrieval; ranking can then combine signals using tensor functions or learned models. This integrated approach is valuable when relevance depends on more than nearest-neighbor lookup. For a simple vector-search requirement, it may be more platform than necessary.

Teams can run Vespa themselves, use the Vespa Kubernetes Operator, or deploy on Vespa Cloud. The choice trades operational ownership for managed service terms and cost. Vespa distributes functions across node clusters and allows cluster size to change without affecting queries or writes, which suits workloads that need to scale while remaining available.

Key features

Ranking and model inference

Vespa supports ONNX and XGBoost models for ranking, plus inference through ONNX Runtime. That gives teams a way to bring model scoring into search rather than treating retrieval and ranking as separate stages. Its client for OpenAI-compatible APIs connects with OpenAI, Google Gemini, Anthropic, Cohere, and Together.ai, but the integration is marked beta, so teams should not make it a production dependency without accounting for that status.

Cloud operations and security

Vespa Cloud encrypts data at rest and in transit, uses node and endpoint certificates, and applies OS patches automatically. Enclave places applications in a tenant's own AWS, Azure, or GCP account, but provider resource costs are additional to Vespa Cloud charges. That arrangement can fit teams that want their own cloud account involved; it does not make the underlying infrastructure free.

All Vespa Cloud plans have a quota. The free trial includes $300 in usage credits, needs no credit card, and stops the application when credits are exhausted. It is a useful evaluation window, not an ongoing free deployment.

Pricing

Vespa is paid, with listed plan figures beginning at 0.05 USD per month (billed). These plan figures sit alongside hourly resource rates, so buyers should distinguish the headline amount from the metered compute, memory, disk, and GPU memory costs.

Startup: 0.05 USD per month (billed), with vCPU at $ 0.05 / hour, Memory GB at $ 0.005 / hour, Disk GB at $ 0.0002 / hour, and GPU Memory GB at $ 0.03 / hour. Shared resources, development zones only, community support without an SLA, and no SSO or autoscaling make this the entry point for development rather than a production service with operational guarantees.
Basic: 0.10 USD per month (billed), with initial hourly rates of vCPU $ 0.1 / hour, Memory GB $ 0.01 / hour, Disk GB $ 0.0004 / hour, and GPU Memory GB $ 0.07 / hour. Volume lowers prices. It suits applications that do not need 24/7 operational support.
Commercial: 0.15 USD per month (billed), with initial hourly rates of vCPU $ 0.145 / hour, Memory GB $ 0.0145 / hour, Disk GB $ 0.0005 / hour, and GPU Memory GB $ 0.1 / hour. Volume lowers prices; 24/7 operational support and backup and disaster recovery make it the more appropriate tier when those services matter.
Enterprise: 0.18 USD per month (billed), with initial rates of vCPU $ 0.18 / hour, Memory GB $ 0.018 / hour, Disk GB $ 0.0007 / hour, and GPU Memory GB $ 0.125 / hour, and a $20,000 minimum monthly spend. The minimum is a substantial commitment, so this tier is for organizations whose scale and requirements justify it.
Self Managed: custom pricing. It includes self-managed Vespa, unlimited support cases, and an available dedicated support representative; teams choosing it retain responsibility for their deployment.

Cloud plans include unlimited support cases, with response times varying by plan. Startup is notably narrower: community support only and no SLA. No seat limits are stated; the practical planning constraints are quotas, hourly resource consumption, support terms, and, for Enterprise, the minimum spend.

Platforms

Vespa supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows deployments. The local deployment guide supports Linux, macOS, and Windows 10 Pro on x86_64 or arm64 with Docker Desktop or Podman Desktop. Python and Java SDKs support teams building against the platform in those languages.

Who it's for

Vespa is a strong fit for teams building AI applications where ranking quality, fresh real-time data, or rising retrieval traffic are central requirements. It is particularly relevant when a team wants retrieval, learned ranking, and serving closely integrated, with the option to operate infrastructure itself or use Vespa Cloud. Teams seeking a small, free hosted vector database, or those that do not need ranking beyond basic retrieval, should weigh simpler alternatives and their free plans.

Pros and cons

Pros: Multiple search modes and configurable ranking make Vespa suited to relevance-sensitive applications, not just vector lookup.
Pros: Self-managed, Kubernetes Operator, and cloud deployment paths let teams choose their operational model.
Pros: Cluster size can change without disrupting queries or writes, supporting growth without that specific scaling operation interrupting service.
Cons: Every cloud plan has a quota, and the trial stops the application when its $300 credits run out.
Cons: Startup is restricted to development zones and lacks SSO, autoscaling, and SLA-backed support.
Cons: Enterprise carries a $20,000 minimum monthly spend, while Enclave also adds cloud-provider resource costs to Vespa Cloud costs.

Alternatives

Choose Pinecone if a freemium API-and-web vector database with a free plan and trial is a better fit; its Starter plan allows up to 5 indexes, 100 namespaces per index, 2 GB storage, 2M monthly write units, and 1M monthly read units.

Qdrant is worth comparing when a free cloud tier or self-hosting across Linux, macOS, and Windows is a priority; its free tier is a single-node cluster with 0.5 vCPU, 1GB RAM, and 4 GB disk.

Consider Chroma if its freemium offering and Apache 2.0-licensed open-source codebase are a better match.

Cloudflare Vectorize may fit teams looking for a freemium API or web option; its Workers Free plan includes 30 million queried vector dimensions and 5 million stored vector dimensions per month, with 100 indexes per account.

FalkorDB is another freemium option with a free plan, though its listed free tier does not include TLS, VPC, clustered deployment, high availability, or multi-zone deployment.

For a freemium platform with a Developer Edition and dedicated-cloud option, compare Kinetica.

SingleStore Helios is a freemium alternative with a free shared workspace for evaluation, development, and non-production testing.

Supabase is another freemium option, with a free plan that includes 50,000 monthly active users, 500 MB database per project, 5 GB egress, and 1 GB file storage.

Verdict

Choose Vespa when search relevance, model-based ranking, and real-time serving need to work together, and your team can manage the operational and cost tradeoffs. Its breadth and deployment flexibility are the main reasons to select it. Look elsewhere if a free hosted plan, simple vector lookup, or predictable low-commitment cloud usage is the priority.
