Overview

dbt Semantic Layer centralizes metric definitions on dbt models and serves them to downstream tools, with MetricFlow generating queries and managing joins. It is best suited to data teams already using dbt that need governed metrics across analytics, applications, and AI. The trade-off is clear: Semantic Layer access requires a qualifying paid dbt tier, and Starter has a monthly query allowance.

Key features

Teams define semantic models and metrics in YAML, keeping metric logic version-controlled and connected to lineage. MetricFlow translates those configurations into SQL at query time and handles joins, helping different tools and teams use the same definitions instead of maintaining separate versions. That consistency is valuable when metrics serve multiple destinations, but it makes the product most compelling for teams willing to build around dbt.

MetricFlow also rewrites queries to reduce compute and latency, optimizes joins, and caches repeated queries. Those measures target efficiency, though actual results will depend on the workload and warehouse. GraphQL and JDBC APIs and a Python SDK let applications query metrics and dimensions. The API, dbt MCP Server, and out-of-the-box integrations cover BI, notebooks, spreadsheets, embedded analytics, and AI systems; Claude and ChatGPT can access governed metrics through MCP.

Supported data platforms are Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, and Redshift. The product is cloud-deployed and available via API and web. dbt Labs lists SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001:2022, ISO 27017, ISO 27018, ISO 42001, GDPR, and CCPA credentials. Starter includes 24x5 support; Enterprise adds priority support with SLAs.

Pricing

The Developer plan is free and includes one developer seat, one project, and 3,000 successful models per month, but not Semantic Layer access. It is suitable for individual dbt development, not teams that need governed metric queries.

Starter costs $100.00 USD per month, billed per user/month. It includes five developer seats, one project, 15,000 successful models per month, 5,000 queried metrics per month, and the Semantic Layer. This is the entry point for teams that need the product; the per-user charge and metric quota matter as usage grows.

Enterprise and Enterprise+ have custom pricing and custom developer seat counts. Both include 100,000 successful models and 20,000 queried metrics per month. Enterprise supports 30 projects, while Enterprise+ allows unlimited projects. These plans suit organizations needing larger model capacity or more projects, with Enterprise+ the fit for those needing unrestricted project count. A free trial is available.

Platforms

Cloud deployment and API and web access suit teams integrating the layer into their existing data and application workflows. Warehouse support covers Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, and Redshift. Defining and querying metrics requires a dbt Starter or Enterprise-tier account; single-tenant accounts require setup and enablement from an account representative.

Who it's for

Choose dbt Semantic Layer when a data team needs shared, governed metric definitions available to analytics, embedded applications, and AI tools, and already operates within dbt. It is a weaker fit for teams seeking a standalone semantic layer or a free way to query governed metrics: Developer excludes the layer, and Starter has a 5,000-query monthly cap.

Pros and cons

Pro: YAML definitions are version-controlled and lineage-aware, giving teams a common place to manage metric logic.
Pro: GraphQL, JDBC, Python, integrations, and MCP provide several routes to deliver governed metrics to tools and AI systems.
Pro: MetricFlow handles joins and includes query rewrites, optimization, and caching aimed at lowering compute and latency.
Con: Semantic Layer access starts at $100.00 USD per month per user; the free Developer plan does not include it.
Con: Starter's 5,000 queried metrics per month may constrain teams with broad or frequent usage.
Con: Warehouse support is centered on four named platforms, so teams on other platforms should confirm fit before choosing it.

Alternatives

For other approaches, see Semantic Layer Software, Data Transformation Tools, and Database Documentation Tools.

MySQL is a freemium option for SQL and NoSQL applications with replication and high-availability components, rather than a direct match for dbt's governed-metrics focus. Azimutt offers schema and data exploration, with unlimited tables on its free plan but no long-term save and a one-user cap. Taavik provides a free database-server plan with saved-query, scheduling, and history limits. DBX is a free, community-built database documentation tool. SchemaCrawler is free, open-source software for teams seeking a database schema tool. tbls is a free, MIT-licensed single-binary CLI. DataDocs offers a free web plan with one data source and 25 assets, making it relevant for documentation needs rather than shared metric serving. dbdocs has a free plan for one user with public sharing and password protection.

Verdict

dbt Semantic Layer is a strong choice for dbt-based data teams that need governed metrics served consistently across analytics and AI destinations. Its version-controlled definitions, query APIs, and broad integration targets make a coherent shared layer; the reasons to look elsewhere are equally practical: access requires a paid dbt plan, usage is capped by tier, and its value depends on fitting the supported warehouse and dbt setup.
