Overview

BeeGFS is a parallel file system for high-performance computing, AI, and other data-intensive workloads. It is best suited to Linux-based clusters that need distributed metadata and parallel file access, with teams prepared to operate and support their own storage. Its scale and S3-related options are compelling, but Community Edition’s 1 PB ceiling and use restrictions make licensing a central design choice.

Key features

BeeGFS runs user-space services over filesystems including ext4, XFS, and ZFS, distributing metadata across multiple servers. That architecture lets teams grow performance and capacity from small clusters to systems with thousands of nodes, rather than treating a single server as the filesystem’s limit. Its native client and server support Linux across x86_64, AMD, ARM, OpenPower, and other CPU architectures.

BeeGFS 8 Remote Storage Targets synchronize with S3 object storage, while BeeGFS Copy handles parallel copying between BeeGFS and other locally mounted filesystems. Those tools make it a stronger fit for mixed storage workflows than a parallel filesystem focused only on its own namespace. System-wide monitoring and Grafana dashboards help operators inspect health and performance; capacity monitoring, performance optimization, and automated tiering are also supported.

Hive Enterprise adds high availability, metadata and file-content mirroring, quota enforcement, and storage pools with tiering. These are consequential capabilities for teams that need resilience, allocation controls, and differentiated storage tiers; they are not part of the free Community Edition. Repositories and packages are digitally signed, and BeeGFS documentation describes TLS encryption by default for some network communication.

Pricing

Plan	Price	What it includes
Community Edition	0.00 USD per free	Up to 1 PB total storage; BeeOND up to 5 compute nodes contributing storage; self-supported end users.
Hive Enterprise	Custom pricing	Unlimited capacity, professional support contract, high availability, mirroring, quota enforcement, and storage pools.

Community Edition is a credible route for self-supported end users whose total storage stays within 1 PB and whose BeeOND use stays within five contributing compute nodes. Crossing the 1 PB threshold requires a subscription-based license. It is not licensed for commercial third-party services or system integration offerings, so providers building BeeGFS into a service should plan on Enterprise. Hive Enterprise removes the capacity ceiling and adds support and availability features, but its custom pricing means buyers need a quote to assess cost. A 60-day trial is available.

Platforms

BeeGFS is available as an API, for Linux, and for self-hosted deployment. It supports hybrid deployment and storage protocols including TCP/IP, InfiniBand, Omni-Path, RoCE, and S3-compatible access. The broad CPU support makes it adaptable to varied Linux cluster hardware, while teams that require a native Windows client should look elsewhere.

Who it's for

BeeGFS fits organizations running HPC, AI or deep-learning, life-sciences, and oil-and-gas workloads that benefit from parallel file access and can operate Linux storage infrastructure. It is particularly relevant where metadata distribution, cluster growth, monitoring, or S3 synchronization matter. Self-supported teams with modest capacity can start with Community Edition; larger deployments, third-party service providers, and teams requiring mirroring, quotas, or professional support should evaluate Hive Enterprise.

Pros and cons

Pros: Distributed metadata and scaling to systems with thousands of nodes suit growing, data-intensive clusters.
Pros: S3 synchronization and parallel copy support workflows across object storage and locally mounted filesystems.
Pros: Monitoring dashboards, multiple network protocols, and broad Linux CPU support give infrastructure teams useful operational flexibility.
Cons: Community Edition’s 1 PB cap and five-node BeeOND limit constrain free deployments.
Cons: Community use is limited to self-supported end users; commercial services and integration require Enterprise licensing.
Cons: High availability, mirroring, quotas, storage pools, and professional support require the custom-priced Enterprise plan.

Alternatives

For a broader storage category, see Storage Management Software or Distributed File System Software.

Ceph is a free, self-hosted Linux option with no trial; choose it if open-source distributed storage and Windows support matter, noting that block storage requires a running Ceph cluster.
MinIO AIStor offers a free single-node plan with a full feature set and redistribution prohibited; consider it when that deployment model fits better than BeeGFS’s cluster-oriented filesystem.
Quobyte has a free-forever edition capped at 150 TB; it may suit teams whose capacity fits that limit.
TrueNAS offers a free software download for any x86 hardware with community support; consider it when that hardware and support model meet your needs.
openmediavault is free software under GNU GPL v3; consider it if that licensing option is the deciding factor.
Hitachi Universal Volume Manager requires a license on the local storage system; consider it if that licensing and system requirement fit your environment.
SUSE Multi-Linux Manager offers paid lifecycle-management and monitoring subscriptions; consider it if those are the capabilities you need.
Komprise Intelligent Data Management is a paid option with a trial; consider it if that is a better fit for your data-management needs.

Verdict

Choose BeeGFS for Linux HPC or AI clusters that need parallel file access, distributed metadata, and room to scale across nodes. Community Edition is a strong starting point for self-supported deployments within its storage and BeeOND limits; choose Hive Enterprise when capacity, support, high availability, or data-management controls exceed those boundaries. Look elsewhere if you need Windows support or cannot accept Enterprise licensing for commercial services.
